Sourcing commercial treadmills from China
Commercial treadmills from China carry 2% UK duty on the exercise-equipment lines considered here, with no listed trade remedy. New motorised machinery must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Specify sustained running performance and check the exact model's documents. Commercial treadmill duty: 2%
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 9506 covers general exercise equipment and other sports goods. The exercise-equipment lines shown carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension. The table separates treadmill configurations; several share the same provisional commodity code.
The tariff attaches an import control on cat and dog fur: imports of that fur and products made from it are banned. Specify materials without cat or dog fur. It also lists export controls on such fur and a cultural-goods export licence measure; ask your customs broker to confirm their relevance to any onward export.
Confirm the commodity code using the treadmill's drive and resistance mechanism, rather than its commercial label. Adjustable resistance and adjustable speed are different features. See the fitness equipment guide for the wider heading and UK import duty and VAT for costing.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial motorised treadmills, subject to classification confirmation | 9506 91 90 00 | 2% | None |
| Commercial treadmills with adjustable resistance mechanisms | 9506 91 10 00 | 2% | None |
Specify sustained running performance
Write down the intended gym use, user load, daily operating pattern, running surface, speed and incline ranges, motor rating under sustained load, belt and deck construction, frame finish and console functions. Agree the site's electrical supply, delivery access, assembly responsibilities and maintenance access. For curved manual models, specify belt resistance and how it is adjusted.
The responsible person must not place new machinery on the Great Britain market or put it into service unless it is safe. For motorised models, request the exact model's risk assessment, conformity declaration, marking photographs, English operating instructions and supporting test records for review before ordering. Treat these as document checks alongside physical testing.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 4 commercial motorised treadmills under 9506 91 90 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 2% is £350. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,850, so it is £3,570. Import taxes total £3,920; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £350 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Running system: check belt tracking, tension, deck condition and speed stability during an agreed loaded running test; record heat, noise and vibration.
Controls: check the emergency stop, safety key, incline travel, speed changes and restart behaviour against the agreed specification.
Build and arrival: check welds, handrails, guards, fasteners and cable routing; inspect the unpacked frame, console and running deck for transit damage before commissioning.
Documents and spares: match model identification to the reviewed paperwork, and check spare belts, decks, rollers and control boards against the supplied machine. Use the inspection guide to agree the inspection scope.
What goes wrong
A brief unloaded demonstration can hide belt slip, motor overheating and speed variation under a runner. Other problems to check for include loose handrails, inconsistent incline movement, inaccessible lubrication points and console damage during transport. Agree a loaded acceptance test and packing supports before production.
Paperwork for a similar treadmill does not establish that the delivered configuration was assessed. Console, motor or controller substitutions can also make replacement parts incompatible. Freeze the component list, require approval for substitutions and identify spare parts by the actual fitted components.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on commercial treadmills from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot shows 2% on both exercise-equipment lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm which code matches the treadmill.
Does adjustable speed mean adjustable resistance for customs?
Do not assume they are equivalent. Send the drive and resistance details to your customs broker and confirm the classification before shipment.
How do I check a treadmill is suitable for gym use?
Agree user load and operating pattern, then witness a loaded running test covering belt tracking, speed stability, heat, noise, incline and stopping controls.
Which spare parts should I agree with the factory?
Identify belts, decks, rollers, motors, controllers and console parts by the fitted component references. Agree replacement compatibility and maintenance instructions before ordering.
