Sourcing battery-can steel sheets from China
Cold-rolled battery-can steel sheets from China carry listed UK duty of 0% to 50%, depending on the commodity line. Heading 7209 covers wide, uncoated non-alloy material; confirm thickness, coil or sheet form and surface condition before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources cold-rolled battery-can steel sheets.

Duty depends on the material as imported
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7209 covers cold-rolled flat products of iron or non-alloy steel, at least 600 mm wide, without cladding, plating or coating. This guide concerns uncoated feedstock for drawing battery cans. Nickel-plated material needs a separate classification check.
The supplied tariff snapshot lists 0% on most lines. Thin coils under 7209 18 99 10 and 7209 18 99 90 carry 50% and are flagged for the steel measure. Relevant steel quotas can provide 0% subject to availability and eligibility; ask your broker to confirm before shipment. No separate anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control is recorded in the supplied heading data.
Confirm the commodity code using the mill's chemistry, actual width and thickness, annealing condition, surface treatment and whether the goods arrive as coils or sheets. Battery use alone does not establish the tariff line. See the wider deep-drawing steel sheet guide for related purchasing considerations.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thin uncoated coil, intermediate thickness band | 7209 18 91 00 | 0% | None |
| Thin annealed uncoated coil, blackplate | 7209 18 99 10 | 50% outside quota | None |
| Other thin uncoated coil | 7209 18 99 90 | 50% outside quota | None |
| Thin uncoated sheets, not in coils, non-electrical | 7209 28 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the steel for your battery-can drawing process
Agree the grade, chemistry, annealing and temper condition, thickness tolerance, flatness, surface roughness and protective oil. State whether the material will be plated before or after forming. Set acceptance criteria for hardness, tensile properties, elongation and drawing performance against your tooling and can geometry.
Approve a drawing trial using material representative of the production batch. Examine splitting, wrinkling, uneven rim height, wall thinning and surface scoring. Agree how samples and mill results will remain traceable to delivered coils or sheet packs.
For Russian iron and steel sanctions compliance, prepare verifiable supply-chain documentation consistent with the prohibitions. Ask the supplier for records tracing the steel through the mill and processing facilities, rather than relying solely on the dispatch country.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 tonnes of uncoated battery-can steel sheets; illustrative order under 7209 28 90 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match coil or pack markings to the ordered grade, heat records, annealing condition and inspection results.
Dimensions: measure thickness across the width, sheet dimensions, flatness and edge condition against the agreed drawing specification.
Formability: compare hardness and mechanical results with the approved material, and inspect trial cans for splits, wrinkles and uneven rims.
Surface and packing: check both faces for rust, pits, scratches and embedded particles; inspect moisture protection and handling damage before releasing stock. Arrange quality inspection around these checks.

What goes wrong
A sample draws successfully but production material has a different temper or inconsistent properties. Burrs start cracks, scratches remain visible after plating, and moisture under wrapping causes pits that cannot be removed without affecting the surface. Record defects by coil or pack and hold affected stock pending review.
A quotation saying only battery steel can conceal a change in coating, width or delivery form. That can change both the manufacturing process and tariff classification. Put the imported condition on the purchase specification and reconcile it with the invoice, packing list and mill records.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on battery-can steel sheets from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 0% to 50%. Most relevant lines are 0%; thin coils under 7209 18 99 10 and 7209 18 99 90 list 50%, with steel quota eligibility requiring confirmation.
Does this guide cover nickel-plated battery-can steel?
Heading 7209 covers material without cladding, plating or coating. Ask your broker to classify nickel-plated stock separately using its imported condition.
How do I check that the steel will draw into battery cans?
Agree mechanical properties and surface criteria, then trial representative production material in your tooling. Check splits, wrinkles, wall thinning and rim consistency before releasing the batch.
Should I prepare for UK carbon border charges?
The UK carbon border adjustment mechanism starts on 1 January 2027. Ask your broker to confirm whether your material falls within its scope and request mill emissions information.
