Sourcing chromium-vanadium wire rod from China
Chromium-vanadium steel wire rod on the relevant other-alloy lines has 50% UK duty outside quota, or 0% within an available tariff-free quota, plus 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty. Classify by mill chemistry and hot-rolled coil form, not the grade name. Cambridge China Bridge sources chromium-vanadium steel wire rod.

Wire rod classification, quotas and anti-dumping
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7227 covers other alloy steel bars and rods, hot-rolled in irregularly wound coils. This guide concerns chromium-vanadium steel in that form. Already drawn spring wire is a different product. See the wider alloy steel wire rod guide for the other steel families within this heading.
The supplied other-alloy lines show 50% third-country duty and the steel measure. An available tariff-free quota can reduce that duty to 0%, but the listed 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty for China remains payable. Outside quota, the duties cumulate. The extract records no countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Have your broker check quota availability and any producer-specific anti-dumping rate before budgeting.
Confirm the commodity code from heat chemistry and processing records. Check whether the listed carbon, chromium and molybdenum conditions for 7227 90 50 00 are met, rather than assuming 7227 90 95 00 from a grade name. The table repeats relevant codes for different applications; these are not separate tariff subdivisions. Intended use alone does not establish the code.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other chromium-vanadium steel wire rod for spring manufacture | 7227 90 95 00 | 50% outside quota | 24.00% residual anti-dumping |
| Chromium-vanadium rod meeting the listed carbon, chromium and molybdenum limits | 7227 90 50 00 | 50% outside quota | 24.00% residual anti-dumping |
Chromium, vanadium and the downstream process
Specify carbon, chromium and vanadium limits separately, together with the other elements relevant to your grade. Describe whether the rod will be drawn into spring wire or formed into another component. Agree delivery condition, hardness, diameter, ovality, surface quality and decarburisation acceptance criteria. A supplier's description of chromium-vanadium steel is not a complete purchase specification.
Request mill records linked to each heat and coil. Agree sampling and independent chemistry checks before shipment, plus a drawing or forming trial using your intended process. Record coil weight, internal and external dimensions, winding condition and packaging so the material fits your handling and pay-off equipment. Use factory verification to check the mill's ability to supply and trace the agreed material.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match coil tags and heat numbers to mill records and the packing list; investigate mixed heats or replacement labels.
Chemistry: verify carbon, chromium and vanadium against the purchase specification; check that the tested samples represent the delivered heats.
Surface: inspect for seams, laps, rust and heavy scale; arrange section checks for agreed decarburisation limits.
Processing: measure diameter and ovality, inspect coil winding, and trial drawing or forming before releasing the batch.
What goes wrong
A substituted grade can look similar while having different chromium or vanadium content. Surface seams may open during drawing, decarburisation can affect finished-part performance, and tangled coils can interrupt feeding. Keep questionable coils separate and preserve heat traceability while the mill investigates. Budgeting for quota relief without anti-dumping also understates the landed cost; see UK import duty and VAT.
The UK carbon border adjustment mechanism starts on 1 January 2027. For imports from that date, check the declared commodity code against HMRC's scope guidance and establish whether your business will need to register. Ask the mill about the emissions information it can provide before committing to repeat supply.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on chromium-vanadium steel wire rod from China?
The relevant other-alloy lines list 50% duty outside quota, or 0% within an available tariff-free quota, plus 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty. Confirm chemistry, quota availability and producer eligibility.
Which commodity code covers chromium-vanadium wire rod?
Check the mill chemistry against 7227 90 50 00 and 7227 90 95 00. The former has specified composition conditions. Confirm hot-rolled coil form and do not classify solely from the supplier's grade name.
Can a Chinese mill obtain a lower anti-dumping rate?
A specified producer's rate requires a valid commercial invoice with the prescribed declaration. Ask your broker to verify eligibility. Without the invoice or declaration, the residual rate applies.
What should I check before drawing chromium-vanadium rod?
Check heat-linked chemistry, diameter, ovality, seams, decarburisation and coil winding. Agree the delivery condition and acceptance criteria, then trial the material through your intended drawing process.
