Sourcing silicon-chromium spring rod from China

Silicon-chromium spring steel wire rod should be classified by chemistry and hot-rolled coil form. Heading 7227 lists duty of 0% to 50%; the other-alloy line lists 50% outside quota, plus 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty for China. Quota relief does not remove anti-dumping. Duty on silicon-chromium spring steel wire rod

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7227 covers hot-rolled bars and rods of other alloy steel in irregularly wound coils. This guide concerns silicon-chromium spring steel feedstock, rather than finished drawn spring wire. See the wider alloy steel wire rod guide for other steel families.

The other-alloy line, 7227 90 95 00, lists 50% duty and the steel measure, plus 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty for China. Ask your broker about tariff-free quota access; anti-dumping remains payable within quota and cumulates with steel duty outside it. The supplied extract records no countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The table repeats this line for different intended uses, rather than implying separate tariff classifications.

Confirm the commodity code from the actual mill chemistry, processing history and imported coil form. A silicon-chromium trade name alone does not establish classification. Check the producer and invoice declaration before accepting a lower exporter-specific anti-dumping rate. Use the import duty and VAT guide when checking the landed-cost calculation.

Spring chemistry, decarburisation and drawability

Specify the intended spring and the downstream drawing, coiling and heat-treatment process. Agree the steel grade and chemical limits, including carbon, silicon and chromium, rather than accepting a supplier's claim that another grade is equivalent. Record delivery condition, rod diameter, ovality tolerance and the mechanical properties needed for your process.

Agree surface-defect and decarburisation acceptance criteria, sampling and dispute testing before ordering. Request heat-linked mill records and retain samples for process trials. Specify coil weight, internal and external dimensions, winding condition and moisture protection so the material fits your handling and pay-off equipment.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match coil tags and heat numbers to the packing list and mill chemistry; investigate mixed heats or substituted grades.

Dimensions: measure rod diameter and ovality across sampled coils; check coil dimensions and winding against your pay-off equipment.

Surface: inspect for seams, laps, rust and heavy scale; arrange agreed decarburisation checks rather than relying on visual inspection.

Process trial: check agreed mechanical properties and trial drawing, coiling and heat treatment before releasing the batch for spring production.

What goes wrong

A supplier may offer finished drawn wire against a rod enquiry, or substitute a grade without confirming its chemistry and delivery condition. These changes can affect both processing and classification. Keep the purchase specification, mill records and shipment identity aligned; use factory verification to check the proposed manufacturing route.

Surface seams can open during drawing, decarburisation can affect spring performance, and tangled coils can interrupt feeding. Agree acceptance criteria and a representative process trial before shipment. Budgeting only for ordinary duty, or assuming a quota removes anti-dumping, can also understate the landed cost.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on silicon-chromium spring steel wire rod from China?

The other-alloy line 7227 90 95 00 lists 50% duty outside steel quota, plus 24.00% residual anti-dumping duty. Confirm classification and quota access with your broker.

Does a steel quota remove anti-dumping duty on spring steel rod?

No. Anti-dumping remains payable within the tariff-free quota and cumulates with the steel duty outside quota.

Is silicon-chromium spring wire the same as wire rod?

Check the processing history. This guide covers hot-rolled rod in irregularly wound coils. Finished drawn spring wire is a different product form; do not order from the grade name alone.

What should I check before making springs from imported wire rod?

Check heat chemistry, delivery condition, diameter, ovality, seams and agreed decarburisation limits. Trial drawing, coiling and heat treatment using your intended production process.
