UK duty on ceramic surgical scrub sinks

Heading 6910 covers ceramic sinks, washbasins and similar sanitary fixtures. For surgical scrub sinks, the relevant distinction is porcelain or china under 6910 10 00 00, or other ceramics under 6910 90 00 00. The table repeats these material lines for different sink configurations. See the ceramic laboratory sinks guide for wider heading coverage.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, both lines carry 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions listed. Both attach an import waste control. For notified waste entering England, shipment can start after consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities involved. For new sinks from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable non-waste declaration.

The snapshot also lists export waste controls and a DCMS export licence measure; ask your broker to distinguish these from import requirements. Confirm the ceramic body and complete product description using finding your commodity code, especially where taps, controls or supports are supplied with the sink.

Specify the basin, fittings and clinical use

Agree the ceramic body, overall dimensions, usable bowl depth, splashback profile, tap position, outlet position and mounting drawing. State whether the sink has an overflow, plug or open outlet, and identify every supplied bracket, waste fitting and tap. Have the clinical buyer and installer approve the proposed arrangement, including splash behaviour and access for cleaning and maintenance.

Specify a smooth glaze and test samples with the buyer's cleaning agents and cleaning method. Ask for model-specific evidence for any chemical-resistance or hygiene claim. Medical-device status depends on the stated intended purpose and mode of action; review the manufacturer's claims rather than relying on the words 'surgical scrub'.

For construction products covered by a designated standard or technical assessment, ask the relevant authority to confirm the applicable conformity route and whether CE marking is accepted for the supplied model. Request any applicable declaration of performance and confirm importer identification requirements with that authority. For installations in England and Wales, water fittings regulations set requirements for fittings. Ask the installer to review the proposed taps and backflow protection before purchase.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 60 porcelain surgical scrub sinks under 6910 10 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 6% is £1,050. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,550, so it is £3,710. Import taxes total £4,760; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,050 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: measure sampled sinks against the approved drawing, including mounting points, tap clearance and waste outlet fit; trial-fit the supplied brackets and fittings.

Glaze and body: inspect the bowl, rim, splashback and outlet for cracks, chips, crazing, pinholes and rough patches; compare the finish with the approved sample.

Drainage and cleaning: run water through an assembled sample, check joints for leaks and note pooling or splash towards the user; repeat the agreed cleaning trial.

Packing and arrival: check that rims and outlets are cushioned without carrying stacking loads. On arrival, photograph damage before unpacking further and reconcile sinks and fittings with the packing list.

What goes wrong

A general washbasin can match the catalogue photograph yet leave too little space for washing forearms, splash towards the user or retain water around the outlet. An approved installation drawing and an assembled sample help reveal these problems before production. Keep the clinical buyer's acceptance separate from the factory's dimensional checks.

Glaze defects, distorted mounting surfaces and chipped outlets can make cleaning or installation difficult. Generic conformity papers may describe a different model or exclude supplied fittings. Match documents to the actual order and inspect packing before dispatch. Use the quality inspection guide to define the inspection scope.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ceramic surgical scrub sinks from China?

Both relevant lines carry 6%: porcelain or china under 6910 10 00 00 and other ceramics under 6910 90 00 00. The tariff snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions.

Does a surgical scrub sink need medical-device certification?

Medical-device status depends on the stated intended purpose and mode of action. Review the manufacturer's claims and seek a classification assessment if unclear; the product name alone is insufficient.

What should I approve before ordering a ceramic scrub sink?

Approve the mounting drawing, bowl depth, tap and outlet positions, splash behaviour, cleaning trial and supplied fittings. Ask the clinical buyer and installer to review an assembled sample.

How do I check ceramic scrub sinks on arrival?

Photograph packing and damage, inspect glaze and outlets, check mounting dimensions, count fittings and trial-fit an assembled sample. Record cracks, chips, leaks and pooling before accepting the delivery.
