UK duty on ceramic Belfast sinks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6910 covers ceramic sinks and other sanitary fixtures. Belfast sinks fall within this family, with porcelain or china under 6910 10 00 00 and other ceramics under 6910 90 00 00. Both carry 6% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures or suspensions are recorded. The table repeats these material lines for different overflow configurations.

Both lines carry a waste import control. Ask your customs broker to confirm the appropriate non-waste declaration for new sinks and the requirements if the consignment is waste. For waste imported into England under notification controls, the exporter in China must apply to the competent authority there for consent. The data also lists waste export controls and cultural-object export licensing. Objects of cultural interest need a UK export licence when exported from Great Britain outside the UK.

Confirm the ceramic body using the factory's material specification rather than the model name alone, then check the commodity code with your broker. For another sink family within the wider heading, see ceramic laboratory sinks.

Specify cabinet fit, overflow and exposed glaze

Fix the ceramic body, glaze colour, exposed faces, external dimensions, bowl depth and acceptable dimensional variation against an approved sample and drawing. Specify the waste opening, overflow arrangement, tap holes and fittings supplied. Give the installer the sink's weight and support details, and agree how the cabinet and worktop will accommodate the actual sink dimensions.

Check whether the intended product is covered by a designated construction-product standard or a UK technical assessment. Where these rules apply in Great Britain, obtain the manufacturer's declaration of performance and check the applicable marking; compliant CE-marked products are accepted. Confirm with the relevant authority the importer's identification requirements and responsibilities for checking the manufacturer's compliance. Use testing and certification support to review the documents against the ordered model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2 tonnes of porcelain Belfast sinks, a hypothetical illustrative order under 6910 10 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,500. Duty at 6% is £1,050. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,550, so it is £3,710. Import taxes total £4,760; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,050 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the external size, rim, bowl depth and waste opening against the approved drawing; trial-fit the specified waste fitting and cabinet support.

Glaze: inspect the exposed front, rim, corners and bowl for chips, cracks, pinholes, uneven colour and crazing against the approved sample.

Drainage: on a level test support, check water drains towards the outlet, the fitted waste seals, and the overflow works where supplied.

Packing: check cushioning around the rim and corners, separation between sinks, pallet stability and model counts. On arrival, photograph damaged packing before unpacking and inspect each sink before installation.

What goes wrong

A sink can match its advertised size yet fail to fit the prepared cabinet because the rim or body varies after firing. An incompatible waste fitting can leak, while a distorted bowl can retain water. Approve the drawing, actual sample and fitting together before accepting production.

Chipped corners, glaze defects and cracks can turn usable stock into returns. Check the exposed front as carefully as the bowl, and open packed samples before loading. Agree how defects will be recorded and resolved, using the quality inspection guide.
