Sourcing cellulose nitrate from China
All listed cellulose nitrate grades from China carry 6% UK duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension recorded. Hazard classification and labelling require scientific competence. Specify the nitrogen content, viscosity and wetting agent before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources cellulose nitrate.

Cellulose nitrate duty and waste controls
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3912 covers cellulose and its chemical derivatives in primary forms. Its cellulose nitrate lines include non-plasticised collodions and celloidin, other non-plasticised grades and plasticised grades. All carry 6% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty or tariff suspension is recorded for these lines. Collodions and celloidin share a commodity code and are shown separately in the table.
The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to these lines. For cellulose nitrate waste arriving from China into England under notification controls, the authorities of dispatch, destination and transit must consent before shipment. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable waste procedure for the material and route before dispatch.
Give your broker the composition, physical form, plasticiser and wetting liquid details to confirm the commodity code. The related cellulose acetate resin guide provides context for another product family within the wider heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-plasticised collodions | 3912 20 11 00 | 6% | None |
| Other non-plasticised cellulose nitrate | 3912 20 19 00 | 6% | None |
| Plasticised cellulose nitrate | 3912 20 90 00 | 6% | None |
Specify nitrogen content, viscosity and wetting agent
Specify cellulose nitrate for your intended coating, ink or laboratory process. Record nitrogen content, viscosity with the solvent, concentration and test temperature, dry solids content, wetting agent identity and content, and any plasticiser. For collodion, specify the complete solvent blend and solution strength. Agree an application trial against an approved sample before accepting a substitute grade.
Classification and labelling must be carried out by someone with scientific competence. Hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use require a safety data sheet. Obtain a sheet matching the actual formulation, and ask your carrier and receiving warehouse to review its transport, handling and storage information before booking shipment.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one tonne of non-plasticised technical cellulose nitrate in 25 kg packs under 3912 20 19 00, invoiced at £1,800 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,300. Duty at 6% is £198. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,498, so it is £699.60. Import taxes total £897.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £198 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the grade, wetting agent, plasticiser and batch references across the order, analysis certificate and safety data sheet.
Analysis: compare nitrogen content, dry solids and wetting agent content with the agreed specification; verify viscosity using the agreed method.
Packing: check seals, leakage, container damage and signs of liquid loss without opening suspect packages for routine inspection.
Application: arrange controlled sample testing for dissolution, clarity, filtration residue and performance in your own formulation.

What goes wrong
A supplier's viscosity result may use a different solvent or concentration, making the apparent grade match misleading. An altered wetting liquid or plasticiser can change compatibility with your formulation. Ask for the full composition and compare test methods before treating a replacement as equivalent.
Leaking seals, liquid loss, contamination or an analysis certificate for a different batch can undermine acceptance. Hold suspect packages for specialist assessment and document the discrepancy before release. Build these checks into your inspection brief.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on cellulose nitrate from China?
All listed cellulose nitrate lines carry 6% duty. The tariff snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for these lines.
Which cellulose nitrate grade should I specify?
Specify nitrogen content, viscosity with its test conditions, dry solids, wetting agent and plasticiser. Compare a sample in your actual process before approving a replacement.
Does cellulose nitrate need a safety data sheet?
Hazardous chemicals supplied for workplace use require a safety data sheet. Obtain one matching the supplied formulation, including its wetting liquid and plasticiser.
Can I import cellulose nitrate waste from China?
Confirm the waste procedure with your broker. For notified waste entering England, dispatch, destination and transit authorities must consent before shipment.
