Calendering machines and rollers from China

0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, calendering or other rolling machines, other than for metals or glass, and cylinders for them, heading 8420, carried 0% on goods from China on all seven lines, with no anti-dumping measure.

Machinery rules

Each machine placed on the UK market must meet the essential health and safety requirements of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with a declaration of conformity, marking and instructions in English. In-running nips between rolls are the main hazard, so trip bars, guards and roll-opening controls must be checked; textile finishing calenders are covered by BS EN ISO 11111-7.

Heated rolls use steam, thermal oil or electric heating, so check surface temperature limits, insulation and the heating system's own pressure or electrical safety evidence.

Specifying a calender

Specify working width, number and type of rolls (steel, chilled cast iron, cotton, rubber or polymer covered), roll diameter and surface finish or engraving, nip pressure range, heating method and maximum temperature, speed range, web handling, controls, voltage and supply, and spare roll covers.

Worked duty example

For a made-up shipment of one textile calender with heated rolls under 8420 10 10 00, add the £6,000 of freight and insurance to the £85,000 free-on-board price and customs sees £91,000. Duty on textile calenders is zero, leaving import VAT of £18,200, 20% of the customs value. For a VAT-registered buyer that is a cash-flow cost rather than a lasting one. Inspection checklist

Rolls: check roll runout, surface finish or engraving quality and hardness, and check the temperature uniformity across heated rolls at the factory.

Safety: check nip guards, trip bars and roll-opening functions against BS EN ISO 11111-7 for textile calenders, test every emergency stop, and check the electrical panel against BS EN 60204-1.

Trial and documents: run your own fabric, paper or film and check thickness, gloss or embossing against samples, and check the declaration of conformity, English manuals and spares list.

What goes wrong

Calenders fail on roll quality, heating and nip safety. Rolls run out of true so thickness or gloss varies across the width, heated rolls show hot and cold bands, roll covers wear or crack early, and nip guards or emergency roll opening are missing on export models.
