Sourcing brass flare pipe fittings from China

Brass flare pipe fittings from China carry 0% UK import duty across the relevant copper-alloy line, with no listed trade remedy. For water supply use in England and Wales, confirm the applicable quality, standards and suitability requirements with the relevant water supplier. UK duty on brass flare fittings

Heading 7412 covers copper tube or pipe fittings. Brass is a copper alloy, so brass flare couplings, elbows, tees and reducing couplings fall within the copper-alloy line, subject to confirming the finished product. The table shows different fitting shapes sharing that tariff line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the supplied tariff record gives 0% duty for goods from China under 7412 20 00 00. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate from customs duty.

Confirm the material, connection design and function against the commodity-code guide. For the wider heading and another connection type, see the brass compression fittings guide.

Specify the flare seat and mating tube

Send a drawing stating the tube outside diameter, flare profile and angle, seat dimensions, bore, thread form and pitch, nut engagement and spanner flats. Identify whether the order includes mating nuts. Agree the brass alloy, material report, intended fluid, operating pressure and temperature, and an assembled leak-test method.

For pressure-system use, confirm the applicable product classification before ordering. HSE includes fittings within piping. For water supply use in England and Wales, confirm the applicable quality, standards and suitability requirements under the Water Fittings Regulations with the relevant water supplier. Ask for evidence matching the exact fitting and application through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 8 cartons of brass flare straight couplings under 7412 20 00 00, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,600, so it is £1,320. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: match the batch report to the ordered brass alloy and arrange composition testing where specified.

Seat and bore: check flare-seat profile, concentricity and surface condition against the drawing; inspect for burrs, cracks and machining debris.

Threads and assembly: gauge threads, check nut engagement and assemble samples with the intended tube and flare tooling; test for leaks using the agreed procedure.

Packing and identity: check size labels and batch identification, protect sealing faces and threads, and sample each ordered variant during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A nut may screw onto a fitting whose flare seat does not match the tube. Wrong seat geometry, damaged sealing faces or an uneven tube flare can leave the joint leaking despite tight threads. Approve an assembled sample using the buyer's tube and tooling before accepting production.

Mixed thread forms, substituted brass and swarf left in the bore can also undermine an order. Keep the approved drawing and sample with the inspection brief, compare each variant separately, and record defects by batch so replacement stock can be checked against the same specification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on brass flare fittings from China?

The supplied tariff record gives 0% under 7412 20 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Are flare fittings interchangeable with compression fittings?

Do not assume interchangeability. Match the connection drawing, tube end preparation, sealing seat and mating nut. Approve an assembled sample.

What should I ask a Chinese flare-fitting factory for?

Ask for a dimensioned drawing, brass alloy designation, batch material report, thread details and an agreed leak-test record using the intended tube.

Can I use brass flare fittings for drinking water?

Confirm suitability for the exact application. For use in England and Wales, confirm applicable water-fittings quality, standards and suitability requirements with the relevant water supplier.
