Zero duty on copper press-fit fittings

Heading 7412 covers copper tube or pipe fittings. Refined copper press-fit fittings fall under 7412 10 00 00; copper alloy fittings fall under 7412 20 00 00. The table separates common shapes, which share the material-based commodity codes.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, both lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the body material and product description before choosing the commodity code. For other connection types, see the copper and brass pipe fittings guide.

Specify the tube, press jaw and seal together

Specify the fitting shape, body material, tube outside diameter, socket dimensions, insertion depth and compatible press jaw profile. Name the intended water or heating application, operating pressure and temperature, seal material and assembly instructions. Ask for sample joints made with the actual tube and pressing tool intended for installation.

For drinking-water use in England and Wales, confirm with the local water company or Water Regs UK which Water Fittings Regulations requirements apply to the fitting's quality, standard and suitability for the circumstances of use. Ask for evidence covering the exact fitting range and seals. Do not accept a report for a different connection system. For compliance questions, contact the local water company or Water Regs UK.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative merchant stock order of mixed cartons of copper press-fit couplings under 7412 10 00 00, invoiced at £52,000 free on board, with £2,600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £54,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £54,600, so it is £10,920. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check socket bore, roundness, insertion depth and tube fit against the approved drawing, including reducers and branch connections.

Seals: check the specified material, seating and condition of each sampled sealing ring; look for missing rings, cuts, twisting and debris in the groove.

Joint performance: press sample assemblies with the agreed tube and jaw profile, then check for leaks under the agreed test conditions. Record the fitting batch and equipment used.

Traceability and packing: match material reports and product evidence to batch markings; check clean interiors, protected sockets and size labels during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A fitting that accepts the tube can still produce a poor joint if the jaw profile is mismatched, insertion is incomplete or the seal is damaged. An alternative seal material may also be unsuitable for the ordered application. Require approval before the factory changes the seal, socket design or body material.

Dented sockets, loose sealing rings and mixed size labels can turn usable stock into installation problems. Compare arrival samples with the approved sample and drawing, and keep suspect batches separate while the supplier investigates.
