Zero duty on blank magnetic audio tapes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8523 covers media for recording sound or other phenomena. Blank magnetic audio tapes fall within the unrecorded magnetic tapes and magnetic discs line, 8523 29 15 00. The table repeats this code for different tape formats and shell constructions; these are not separate tariff lines.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China under this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Import VAT is separate from customs duty. See the import duty and VAT guide.

Confirm the commodity code using the tape format and whether anything is recorded before shipment. For wider heading coverage, see blank recordable optical discs. For video recording media, see our blank video cassette sourcing guide.

Specify the coating, tape length and shell

State whether you need finished cassettes, open reels or tape pancakes for loading. Specify coating formulation, tape width and thickness, recording duration at the intended speed, leader material and attachment method. For cassettes, agree shell construction, hubs, pressure pad, guide rollers and recording-protection tabs.

Approve recording samples on the intended equipment with the agreed bias and equalisation settings. Define acceptance criteria for hiss, dropouts, output consistency and winding resistance. Agree reel and hub compatibility, packaging and batch identification, and require approval before changes to the coating or shell components.

UK businesses importing or selling consumer products are responsible for their safety. Consumer tapes supplied in Great Britain must be safe. Assess sharp shell edges, loose components and foreseeable handling risks alongside recording performance; retain the assessment and approved samples.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of blank audio cassettes for a recording supplies shop under 8523 29 15 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,100, so it is £420. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tape and recording: check coating consistency, creases and splices; record and replay production samples using the agreed equipment and settings.

Transport: run the tape through its full travel; check rewind, fast winding, hub movement, leader attachment and snagging.

Shell and reel: compare dimensions and components with the approved sample; check pressure pads, rollers, screws, welds and sharp edges.

Packing and identity: check cases, moisture damage, batch labels and declared recording duration. Confirm the supplied tape is blank and repeat agreed checks at inspection.

What goes wrong

A cassette can look correct but bind because of distorted shells, poorly fitted hubs or inconsistent winding. Loose pressure pads and weak leader joints can interrupt playback or leave tape inside the machine. Test complete production units rather than accepting a demonstration made with loose tape.

Coating changes can alter output, hiss and the recording settings needed for usable results. Creases, uneven coating or shedding can cause dropouts and dirty the tape path. Compare production recordings with retained samples, inspect the equipment after testing and agree how failed batches will be handled.
