Sourcing belt conveyors from China

Belt conveyors from China under 8428 33 00 00 carry 0% UK import duty. New complete machinery placed on the Great Britain market must have CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. UK duty on belt conveyors

Heading 8428 covers lifting and handling machinery, including conveyors. The belt-type continuous-action conveyor line is 8428 33 00 00. The table shows applications of this same tariff line, rather than separate commodity lines. Conveyors specially designed for underground use have a separate classification.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, ordinary duty on goods from China under 8428 33 00 00 was 0%. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for this line. These findings concern the belt-conveyor line, rather than every machine within the heading.

Confirm the commodity code from the complete machine specification and intended use. A replacement belt is a different product from a complete conveyor. For another conveyor family within this heading, see powered roller conveyors.

Specify the belt, load and transfer points

Describe the product being moved, its weight, footprint and surface, and whether it arrives loose or in cartons. Agree usable belt width, conveying length, working height, incline, speed range and loading pattern. Provide drawings of the adjoining equipment and transfer gaps so small packages do not tip or catch.

Specify belt material, surface texture, joint construction, tracking adjustment, tensioning and cleaning access. Agree the motor, gearbox, electrical supply and control connections. Ask for a loaded trial using representative goods, including starts, stops and transfers, as part of the pre-shipment inspection.

For new complete machinery supplied in Great Britain, check CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. The technical file must be compiled and available on request. Ask the supplier to identify the exact conveyor configuration covered by its documentation.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: One belt conveyor for a packing line, illustrative only under 8428 33 00 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Belt and tracking: check the material and joint against the order, then observe alignment under representative loads and repeated starts.

Transfers and frame: check usable width, working height, support stability and transfer gaps against the agreed drawings; inspect for transport distortion.

Guards and controls: inspect access to drive pulleys and return rollers, test emergency stops and agreed interlocks, and check maintenance isolation.

Documents and spares: match the machine identity to the declaration and marking; check English instructions, wiring drawings and the agreed belt, bearing and drive spares.

What goes wrong

An unloaded demonstration can conceal belt slip, tracking drift or a motor that struggles during a loaded start. A transfer gap can catch small cartons even when the conveyor itself runs smoothly. Agree acceptance checks with representative goods and inspect the actual machine before shipment.

Missing guards, inaccessible tensioners and unclear wiring make installation and maintenance harder. Documentation for a different conveyor configuration can also leave unresolved compliance questions. Resolve these before releasing the machine, and agree who installs and commissions it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on belt conveyors from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% ordinary duty for 8428 33 00 00, with no trade remedy, suspension or attached import control on that line. Confirm classification from the machine specification.

Is a CE certificate enough for a belt conveyor?

Ask for the declaration of conformity covering the actual machine, the appropriate CE or UKCA marking and English instructions. A generic certificate does not replace these deliverables.

How should I test a conveyor before shipment?

Use representative goods and the agreed loading pattern. Check loaded starts, belt tracking, transfers, stops and guarding against the written acceptance criteria.

Does this code also cover replacement conveyor belts?

This guide covers complete belt conveyors. Describe a replacement belt separately and confirm its classification before declaring it under a machinery code.
