A flat 4% duty on battery-powered lanterns

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8513 covers portable electric lamps designed to function from their own energy source. Battery-powered camping lanterns fall within the lamps line, 8513 10 00 00; their parts have a separate line, 8513 90 00 00.

Both supplied lines carry 4% duty for goods from China. The supplied facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. The table shows lantern variants sharing the same lamps code, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual power source, function and goods supplied. For the wider product family, see torches and head torches.

Specify light distribution, batteries and charging

Specify replaceable or built-in batteries, battery chemistry, usable light output at each setting, run time at the stated setting, colour temperature and diffuser material. Agree whether the lantern stands on a table, hangs inside a tent or collapses for packing. Identify the charging connection, supplied cable and whether a mains charger is included.

Product safety compliance must be demonstrated before sale. Camping lanterns also need hazardous-substance compliance evidence and importer identification on the product or packaging. WEEE obligations apply; electrical-equipment producers must register annually. Confirm any battery producer obligations with the relevant authority. For lithium rechargeable models, obtain the transport test summary discussed in the reference guide before agreeing shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: 5,000 battery-powered camping lanterns under 8513 10 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,900. Duty at 4% is £516. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,416, so it is £2,683.20. Import taxes total £3,199.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £516 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Light and run time: compare production samples with the approved lantern, check illumination around the diffuser and run each advertised setting to check sustained usable light.

Batteries and charging: verify the agreed cells, battery-door fit and polarity markings. Charge rechargeable samples from empty while monitoring temperature, then check operation and the charging indicator.

Seals and structure: test the claimed water resistance, inspect the charging-port cover and battery-door seal, and check the hanging hook, handle and collapsible mechanism after handling and drop checks.

Documents and labels: match reports to the supplied model and battery. Check importer identification, battery and WEEE markings, and that the instructions describe the supplied controls. Use quality inspection to record defects before shipment.

What goes wrong

A lantern can look bright when first switched on but dim well before the advertised run time. Weak cells, overheating charge circuits and leaking seals are problems identified in the reference guide. Check useful illumination throughout the run rather than accepting the initial brightness alone.

Include the hanging hook, charging-port cover and diffuser in the acceptance sample. A cracked diffuser, loose hook or poorly seated cover can make an otherwise working lantern unsuitable for camping. Record the defect and agree corrective work before accepting the batch.
