Sourcing battery powered searchlights from China

Battery powered searchlights and their parts from China carry a flat 4% UK import duty, with no trade remedies shown. Consumer searchlights supplied in Great Britain must be safe; check battery, beam and charging evidence before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources battery powered searchlights.

A flat 4% duty on searchlights and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8513 covers portable electric lamps designed to function from their own energy source, excluding lighting equipment of heading 8512. Portable battery powered searchlights fall within this description. The table shows searchlight variants sharing the lamps code, alongside the parts code.

The supplied tariff extract shows 4% duty for Chinese-origin lamps under 8513 10 00 00 and parts under 8513 90 00 00. It records no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls for either line.

Confirm the commodity code using the power source, portability and description of any separately supplied parts. For related portable lighting within this heading, see rechargeable inspection lamps.

Specify the searchlight beam and battery

Specify a concentrated search beam or a broader flood beam, usable beam distance, sustained output and run time in each operating mode. Agree the measurement method and conditions before approving packaging claims. Record battery chemistry, capacity, replaceability, charging connection, supplied charger and whether the lamp can operate while charging.

Agree handle strength, lamp-head adjustment, switch operation with gloves, lens material and the claimed water resistance. Ask for photobiological safety assessment of very bright models. For rechargeable lithium versions, obtain the transport test summary requested by the forwarder. Compare the documents with the actual battery and lamp supplied.

Ordinary electrical searchlights fall within hazardous-substance restrictions unless specifically excluded. Ask for supporting compliance documents. Products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Electrical equipment producers must register annually; check the separate battery registration route against battery type and quantity. Resolve these matters through testing and certification before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 1,000 rechargeable battery powered searchlights, illustrative order under 8513 10 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,900. Duty at 4% is £516. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,416, so it is £2,683.20. Import taxes total £3,199.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £516 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Beam: measure output, beam pattern and usable distance on production samples; check brightness throughout the claimed run time, rather than judging the initial burst.

Battery and charging: compare battery identity with the approved specification, charge from empty while monitoring temperature, and check charging indicators and connector fit.

Housing and seals: check handle attachment, lamp-head locking, lens fit, battery-door seals and charging-port covers; test the claimed water resistance and drop resistance.

Labels and documents: match the lamp, battery and charger to the supplied reports, packaging claims and importer details. Use quality inspection to record findings against the approved sample.

What goes wrong

A bright initial beam can hide rapid dimming as the lamp warms up or the battery discharges. A concentrated centre spot can also look impressive while giving little useful surrounding light. Reject samples that meet the beam claim only briefly or only in a different operating mode.

Weak handle fixings, loose adjustment joints and poorly seated seals can fail during carrying or outdoor use. Battery substitutions can change run time and charging temperature. Agree the battery identity and acceptance checks in the purchase specification, then compare arrival samples with the approved lamp.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on battery powered searchlights from China?

The supplied tariff extract shows 4% duty on portable battery powered searchlights and their parts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

How do I check a searchlight's beam distance?

Agree the measurement method, battery condition and operating mode. Check production samples for usable distance and sustained brightness, alongside run time.

What documents should I request for lithium battery searchlights?

Request documents matching the actual lamp and battery, including battery safety reports and the lithium transport test summary your forwarder requests.

Does importing searchlights create recycling obligations?

Electrical equipment producers must register annually. Check battery producer registration separately, as the route depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market.
