Sourcing battery-powered book lights from China

Battery-powered book lights from China carry 4% UK duty, with the same rate for lamp parts and no listed trade remedies. UK importers are responsible for consumer product safety; check electrical compliance, battery obligations and lithium transport evidence. Cambridge China Bridge sources battery-powered book lights.

A flat 4% duty on battery-powered book lights

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8513 covers portable electric lamps designed to function from their own energy source. Battery-powered book lights fall within the lamps line, 8513 10 00 00; dedicated lamp parts are listed under 8513 90 00 00. The table distinguishes book-light designs sharing the lamp code.

Both supplied commodity lines carry 4% duty for goods from China. The snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspensions or attached import controls. These tariff entries do not replace product compliance checks before sale.

Confirm the commodity code against the finished product, its power source and whether the shipment contains complete lamps or parts. For the wider product family, see torches and head torches.

Specify the clip, page coverage and battery

Specify replaceable or rechargeable batteries, battery chemistry, brightness settings, colour temperature, neck adjustment and the charging connection. Agree the book thicknesses the clip must grip, protective pad material and whether the lamp folds for storage. Compare samples on paperback and hardback books, checking page coverage and glare from glossy paper.

UK importers are responsible for consumer product safety. Electrical equipment is within the scope of hazardous-substance rules unless specifically excluded. Electromagnetic compatibility rules cover equipment liable to generate disturbance, with exceptions; ask your testing provider to assess the actual circuit. Request model-specific reports, a declaration of conformity and technical documentation through testing and certification.

Book lights have WEEE obligations, including annual producer registration. Supplied batteries bring battery obligations; their registration route depends on battery type and the amount placed on the market. For rechargeable lithium models, confirm applicable transport testing and test-summary requirements with the relevant transport authority or your customs broker, using the wider portable-light guide as a starting point. Settle these documents with the factory and forwarder before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 rechargeable clip-on book lights under 8513 10 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,900. Duty at 4% is £516. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,416, so it is £2,683.20. Import taxes total £3,199.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £516 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Clip and neck: check grip on the agreed book thicknesses, pad adhesion and page marking; repeatedly adjust the neck and confirm that it holds the lamp head in position.

Reading light: check page coverage, glare, visible flicker and every brightness setting in a dim room; compare colour and output with the approved sample.

Power and charging: run samples at the agreed setting, record useful brightness at the end, inspect battery contacts and covers, and monitor temperature while rechargeable models charge from flat.

Documents and packing: match the supplied model, battery and accessories to the agreed reports, markings and instructions. Check folded lamps for neck damage and accidental switch activation during inspection.

What goes wrong

A clip can grip the sample hardback yet slip on a paperback, while hard pads can crease covers. A flexible neck can sag or develop intermittent wiring after repeated bending. Treat grip, surface protection and adjustment endurance as separate acceptance checks.

A bright spot near the spine can leave the outer page dark. Battery substitutions can shorten useful reading time, and a changed charging circuit can invalidate the relevance of the approved reports. Record the approved battery and circuit, then compare production samples and arrival samples against that record.
