Sourcing automatic pressure controllers from China

Automatic pressure controllers from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty, depending on classification. Mains-powered models need electrical safety evidence; pressure equipment rules may also apply according to the controller's function. Specify the medium, switching differential and safe failure behaviour. Cambridge China Bridge sources automatic pressure controllers.

Duty by controller type

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, manostats and hydraulic or pneumatic regulating instruments carried 0% duty on goods from China. Other automatic controllers and parts carried 2%. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Heading 9032 covers automatic regulating or controlling instruments and apparatus.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to these lines. Confirm its application and the declaration requirement with your customs broker, using the controller's construction and any gas content. Do not assume that a pressure controller intended for refrigeration qualifies for an exemption.

Confirm the commodity code from the actual function and what is shipped. A controller imported within a machine is usually classified with that machine. See the wider thermostats and controllers guide for other products in this heading.

Specify pressure settings and failure behaviour

State the controlled medium, working pressure range, maximum allowable pressure, wetted materials, seal material and connection thread. Distinguish a switching controller from a controller that continuously adjusts an output. Agree the switching differential, adjustment method, relay load, supply voltage and behaviour after a power cut or loss of the pressure signal.

Mains-powered controllers need electrical safety evidence, as explained in the wider guide. Where the electrical safety regulations apply, the importer must ensure instructions accompany the equipment in easily understandable English. Pressure equipment includes safety accessories and pressure accessories; ask a testing adviser to assess whether the controller's pressure-bearing or protective function brings it within those rules.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 1,000 automatic pressure switches under 9032 20 00 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,000, so it is £2,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Pressure response: compare readings and switching points with a calibrated reference while pressure rises and falls. Record the differential and repeatability against the approved specification.

Connections and seals: check thread form, port dimensions, wetted materials and seal identity against the drawing. Check for leakage using the agreed medium and test method.

Electrical operation: check terminal markings, contact operation and switching under the intended load. Test the agreed response to power loss and sensor disconnection.

Production identity: compare model labels, settings, wiring diagrams and supplied instructions with the approved sample and supporting reports. Record discrepancies during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A controller may switch at the correct pressure on a static bench yet chatter when a pump pulsates. An unsuitable differential can cause repeated starts, while incompatible seals or an incorrect thread can produce leaks. Test the sample with the intended pump, compressor or valve before approving production.

A relay rating does not establish suitability for every motor load. Check the proposed switching arrangement and whether an external contactor is needed. Agree what happens when a pressure port blocks or a signal fails, and prevent the factory from substituting seals, sensors or relays without approval.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on pressure controllers from China?

Manostats and hydraulic or pneumatic regulating instruments carry 0%; other automatic controllers and parts carry 2%. The selected lines have no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is every electronic pressure controller a manostat?

Do not classify from the sales name alone. Give your broker the sensing method, control function, output and shipment configuration so they can confirm the appropriate line.

What should I specify before ordering?

Specify the medium, pressure range, switching differential, connection thread, seal material, supply voltage, switching load and response to power or signal loss.

How do I check whether the controller suits my pump?

Test an approved sample with the intended pump and switching arrangement. Check pressure pulsation, repeated starting, leakage and recovery after a power cut.
