Sourcing automatic ORP controllers from China
Automatic ORP controllers from China normally fall under the residual controller line at 2% UK duty; related lines range from 0% to 2%. For mains-powered models, confirm electrical safety evidence requirements with the relevant authority, and applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements must be met before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources automatic ORP controllers.

Duty on ORP controllers and related equipment
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 9032 covers automatic regulating or controlling instruments and apparatus. For a standalone electronic ORP controller, 9032 89 00 90 is the starting point for classification, carrying 2% duty from China. Parts and accessories under 9032 90 00 90 also carry 2%. Neither line shows an anti-dumping or countervailing duty or a suspension.
The table includes neighbouring equipment for comparison: hydraulic or pneumatic regulating apparatus carries 0%; digital valve controllers carry a basic 2% with a 0.00 % suspension, subject to its conditions. These descriptions do not establish eligibility for an electronic ORP controller. The tariff attaches a fluorinated greenhouse gas import control to all selected lines and a supplementary-unit control to digital valve controllers. Confirm applicability and declaration requirements with your customs broker.
Provide the broker with the operating description, probe inputs, control outputs and details of what ships together. Confirm the commodity code for the actual goods, including separately imported probes and complete dosing assemblies. The automatic acidity controller guide provides related heading context.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other automatic controllers, including ORP models subject to classification | 9032 89 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Parts and accessories of automatic controllers | 9032 90 00 90 | 2% | None |
| Digital valve controllers for liquids and gases | 9032 89 00 40 | 2% | None |
| Hydraulic or pneumatic regulating apparatus | 9032 81 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the probe and dosing behaviour
Specify the liquid being treated, operating conditions, probe electrode and reference system, cable and connector, measurement range and agreed accuracy. Define whether the output raises or lowers the oxidation-reduction potential, the switching differential, dosing delay and alarm response. Agree the behaviour after probe disconnection, loss of flow and power restoration. Test a sample with the dosing pump and probe that the buyer will actually use.
For mains-powered models, obtain electrical safety evidence for the exact model. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the model's rated voltage brings it within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations. Applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements must be met before placing equipment on the Great Britain market. Electrical and electronic equipment, including cables and spare parts, falls within hazardous-substance restrictions unless specifically excluded. Request supporting reports and declarations through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of automatic ORP controllers supplied with compatible probes under 9032 89 00 90, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 2% is £218. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,118, so it is £2,223.60. Import taxes total £2,441.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £218 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Probe and reading: inspect the probe, protective cap, cable and connector on arrival. Compare readings in suitable reference solutions against the approved sample and agreed tolerance; record stabilisation and drift.
Dosing output: simulate changing readings and verify the dosing direction, switching differential and alarm response. Test the output with the intended pump load and check for relay chatter.
Fault behaviour: disconnect the probe, interrupt the flow signal and restore power. Check that dosing stops or resumes exactly as agreed, with visible fault indications.
Enclosure and documents: inspect terminal security, seals, cable entries and shipping damage. Match model labels, firmware and supplied wiring instructions to the approved sample and reports. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong
A matching connector does not prove that a replacement probe is compatible. An unsuitable reference system, contamination or electrical interference can produce unstable readings. Reversed dosing logic or a missing flow interlock can keep the pump running when treatment should stop. Reject substitutions without a repeat sample test, and agree probe cleaning, storage and replacement arrangements before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on automatic ORP controllers from China?
The residual automatic-controller line carries 2%, as do parts and accessories. Related selected lines range from 0% to 2%, with a conditional suspension for digital valve controllers. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties are listed.
Can I use my existing ORP probe with a Chinese controller?
Ask the factory to confirm the electrode and reference system, connector and input compatibility. Send the probe specification and test the combination in suitable reference solutions before approving production.
What should an ORP controller do when the probe fails?
Agree the fault response in the purchase specification. Test probe disconnection, loss of flow and power restoration, checking that the dosing output and alarm behave as approved.
Does the fluorinated-gas tariff control apply to an ORP controller?
The tariff attaches the control, but applicability needs confirmation with your broker. Official guidance says pre-charged equipment cannot be imported into Great Britain without sufficient quota authorisations or delegations.
