Sourcing automatic voltage regulators from China

Automatic voltage regulators and their parts classified in heading 9032 carry 2% UK duty from China, with no trade remedy or suspension listed for the relevant lines. Confirm with the relevant authority whether electrical safety rules apply to the actual model and intended use. Cambridge China Bridge sources automatic voltage regulators.

Duty on separately imported voltage regulators

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, heading 9032 covers automatic regulating or controlling instruments and apparatus. Automatic voltage regulators classified as other instruments under 9032 89 00 90 and parts under 9032 90 00 90 carry 2% duty from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for these lines. The table shows buying configurations sharing the relevant tariff lines.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to both lines. Products containing banned fluorinated gases must not be placed on the Great Britain market. Ask the factory about gas content and have your customs broker confirm the declaration requirement for the actual goods; the attached control alone does not establish that a regulator contains such gases.

Confirm the commodity code from the regulating function, construction and condition as imported. A controller imported within a machine is classified with that product, as explained in the thermostats and controllers guide. Do not assume that equipment sold as a voltage stabiliser belongs here.

Specify sensing and excitation compatibility

For a generator regulator, specify the alternator model, excitation arrangement, sensing supply, field output, connector layout and mounting dimensions. Agree the adjustment range, regulation tolerance, load response and behaviour when sensing is lost. For an enclosed regulator, also specify the input range, continuous load, cooling and protective functions. Approve a wiring diagram and a tested sample.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the equipment's rated voltage and intended use bring it within electrical safety regulations. Obtain applicable UKCA or CE evidence for the exact model. Electromagnetic compatibility regulations apply to equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Ask for an applicability assessment and supporting reports rather than relying on a logo.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 50 generator voltage regulator modules under 9032 89 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,900. Duty at 2% is £78. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,978, so it is £795.60. Import taxes total £873.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £78 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity and wiring: compare the model, board revision, terminal markings, connector polarity and mounting holes with the approved sample and drawing. Check solder joints, loose terminals, damaged insulation and protective coatings.

Regulation: have a competent technician test samples on the intended alternator or test rig. Measure output stability across the agreed operating range and record response to load changes and sensing loss.

Heat and protection: test under the agreed continuous load and cooling conditions. Check for overheating, unstable adjustment and failure to recover after a power interruption. Compare protective behaviour with the specification.

Documents and packing: check model-matched reports, wiring instructions and individual protection against moisture and impact. For equipment within electrical safety scope, the importer must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. Use quality inspection to agree the checks before shipment.

What goes wrong

A replacement board can fit the mounting holes yet have the wrong sensing arrangement or field output. Reversed connections, poor soldering and substituted components can cause unstable voltage, overheating or failure under load. A no-load demonstration does not establish compatibility with the buyer's generator.

Record the approved board revision and component specification in the order. Require approval before substitutions and repeat the agreed functional checks on production samples. Keep failed units and test records so the factory can investigate the cause.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on automatic voltage regulators from China?

The relevant other-controller and parts lines in heading 9032 carry 2% duty from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension for these lines.

Will a replacement regulator work with my generator?

Check the alternator model, excitation arrangement, sensing supply, field output and wiring. Test an approved sample on the intended alternator before ordering production.

Does an automatic voltage regulator need electrical safety evidence?

Confirm with the relevant authority whether electrical safety rules apply and what conformity evidence is needed. Check the model's ratings and intended use; do not assume every bare regulator board has the same obligations.

Is a voltage stabiliser always classified in heading 9032?

Confirm classification from its construction and regulating function. A trade name alone is insufficient, and a controller imported within a machine is classified with that product.
