Sourcing auto-darkening welding goggles from China

Auto-darkening welding goggles from China carry 2% base UK duty, or 0% under the protective-eyewear suspension where eligible. Welding eye protection, including its filters, should conform to relevant British and European standards. Check evidence for the complete model and intended process. Cambridge China Bridge sources auto-darkening welding goggles.

Duty and protective-eyewear suspension

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9004 covers spectacles, goggles and similar eyewear. The relevant lines distinguish plastic lenses from lenses of other materials. Only these lines are shown because the remaining lines cover sunglasses. Confirm the complete filter assembly and imported form with your broker using commodity-code guidance.

Both relevant lines carry 2% base duty for goods from China, with a 0.00 % suspension limited to protective spectacles and goggles. The tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Ask your customs broker to confirm the document code and any applicable deadline for claiming the suspension. Confirm eligibility and declaration treatment before shipment.

The UK Trade Tariff attaches CITES import and export controls. CITES specimens include items made from animal or plant parts or derivatives; check any unusual natural materials and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirement for goods from China. The chemical splash goggles guide provides wider heading context.

Specify the filter and intended welding process

State the intended welding processes, lens materials, light and dark states, adjustment controls, switching behaviour, sensitivity, return delay and power source. Agree how the factory will demonstrate performance across those settings, including weak arc detection, obstructed sensors and low battery conditions. Specify replacement cover lenses, strap adjustment and compatibility with other protective equipment.

HSE says welding eye protection, including filters, should conform to relevant British and European standards. Ask for certificates and test reports identifying the complete goggles and filter assembly. Compare the tested model with the sample, production specification and markings. Check the applicable UKCA or CE conformity route and English user information with testing and certification support.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of auto-darkening welding goggles; confirm suspension eligibility under 9004 90 90 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £950 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,450. Duty at 2% is £69. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,519, so it is £703.80. Import taxes total £772.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £69 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Filter: have a competent laboratory check optical protection and switching performance against the agreed specification; use controlled test equipment rather than a wearer looking at a welding arc.

Sensors and power: check sensor exposure, adjustment controls, battery contacts and the specified low-power behaviour on production samples.

Fit and assembly: check strap retention, lens seating, cover-lens replacement, viewing distortion and compatibility with the intended accompanying protection.

Documents and marking: match model references, filter identification, conformity marking and English instructions to the approved evidence during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Reject samples that flicker, darken unevenly, fail to detect the intended arc or behave differently from the approved sample. Check for loose battery contacts, scratched cover lenses, slipping straps and sensor positions obstructed by the frame or accompanying equipment.

A visibly darkening filter does not establish optical protection. A filter report may describe a different assembly from the delivered goggles. Agree the scope of protection and intended use before ordering, and investigate any change to the filter, electronics or frame before accepting production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on auto-darkening welding goggles from China?

The relevant lines carry 2% base duty, with a 0.00 % suspension for qualifying protective spectacles and goggles. The tariff facts record no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Which commodity code covers auto-darkening welding goggles?

The relevant heading lines are 9004 90 10 00 for plastic lenses and 9004 90 90 00 for other lens materials. Ask your broker to confirm the complete filter assembly and imported form.

Is a darkening demonstration enough to approve welding goggles?

No. Ask for model-specific evidence of optical protection and switching performance, then compare the complete tested assembly with the production sample.

What should I specify before asking a factory for a quote?

Specify intended welding processes, lens materials, filter states, controls, sensor behaviour, power source, fit and replacement cover lenses. Ask which complete model the supporting reports cover.
