UK duty on terracotta gargoyles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6905 covers roofing tiles, chimney pots, cowls, chimney liners, architectural ornaments and other ceramic constructional goods. Architectural terracotta gargoyles fall within the architectural-ornaments description under 6905 90 00 00. The table shows variants using this same tariff line.

The supplied tariff lists 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. It also lists waste import and export controls and a cultural-interest export licence entry. Ask your broker to confirm those entries for the transaction. Confirm the commodity code using the material, intended building use and drawings. See the ceramic roof-finials guide for the wider heading.

Waste shipment controls apply only if the material is waste. If a China-to-England consignment is waste subject to notification controls, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority; shipment can begin after consent from the Environment Agency and other competent authorities involved. The UK Trade Tariff attaches the waste import control: ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirements, especially for reclaimed or damaged material.

Specify the sculpture, drainage and mounting

Specify the sculpted profile, overall dimensions, projection, weight, hollow or solid body, clay colour, surface finish and fixing recesses. Distinguish a working rainwater spout from a decorative figure. For a spout, agree the channel, outlet direction and connection to the building's drainage. For replacements, approve a sample against the existing masonry and agree how firing shrinkage will be allowed for.

For Great Britain, check whether the exact product is covered by a designated standard or technical assessment. Official guidance allows a technical-assessment route for products not covered or not fully covered by a designated standard. Construction products meeting EU requirements, including CE marking, can continue to be supplied to that market. Ask the supplier to identify its applicable route and supporting documents; arrange testing and certification checks before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of replacement terracotta gargoyles for a restoration project under 6905 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £4,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,500, so it is £3,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Body and finish: compare the fired colour and sculpted detail with the approved sample; check the mouth, ears, wings and fixing recesses for cracks, chips and glaze defects.

Fit and support: measure mounting faces, projection and fixing positions against the drawing; trial-fit the gargoyle with the proposed support and adjoining masonry.

Drainage and weathering: run water through functional spouts and look for pooling or discharge back towards the wall; review frost-resistance evidence for the clay body and firing supplied.

Packing and arrival: check that cushioning supports the body without loading projecting features; unpack and photograph damage before installation. Use the quality inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A sculpted sample can look right while the production pieces shrink differently, leaving mounting faces or drainage connections misaligned. Thin projecting features can break in transit, and colour can vary between firings. Keep an approved fired sample and require photographs of mounting faces as well as the visible sculpture.

A decorative mouth may hide a poorly formed water channel. Pooling, water returning towards the wall and frost damage can undermine an otherwise acceptable appearance. Agree a functional water check, weathering evidence and the installation support before accepting the batch.
