Zero duty on ceramic roof finials

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 6905 covers roofing tiles, chimney pots, cowls, chimney liners, architectural ornaments and other ceramic constructional goods. Ceramic architectural finials belong within the other-goods line, 6905 90 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. It attaches an import waste control. For goods treated as waste, confirm the requirement with your customs broker before shipping. For notified waste imported into England, the exporter must apply to the dispatch country's competent authority for consent. The record also lists waste export control and a cultural-object export licence.

Confirm the commodity code using the ceramic material, drawing and intended roof use, especially where the ornament is supplied as part of a roofing fitting. See the wider clay roof tiles guide for tiles and matching fittings.

Specify the finial base and roof fixing

Specify the silhouette, overall dimensions, base profile, ridge angle, wall thickness, weight, fixing holes and access for the fixing. State whether the finial is integral with a ridge fitting or sits on a separate base. Supply a drawing and a sample of the ridge it must fit. Agree the ceramic body, glaze, colour reference and acceptable firing variation.

Ask a construction-product adviser to confirm the applicable standard or technical assessment for the exact finial and intended use. The published clay roof tiles guide describes performance declarations and marking for clay roofing fittings; establish whether your design is such a fitting. Where CE marking has been legitimately affixed, the product can continue to be supplied to the Great Britain market without adding UKCA marking.

Ask for frost-resistance evidence for the actual ceramic body, glaze and firing supplied. Agree a trial assembly with the proposed ridge and fixing, and have the roofing designer review the fixing arrangement. A photograph of a finial on a roof does not demonstrate fit or resistance to movement.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative palletised order of ceramic roof finials for a roofing merchant under 6905 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £4,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,500, so it is £3,700. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure the base profile and fixing-hole positions against the drawing, then trial-fit sampled finials to the approved ridge.

Body and finish: check for cracks around the neck and base, chipped points, glaze defects and colour differences against the approved sample in daylight.

Evidence: match the product identification and firing batch to the agreed test reports and any applicable performance documentation.

Packing and arrival: check that projections are cushioned and cannot touch neighbouring pieces. On arrival, photograph damaged cartons, inspect the contents and retain the batch labels. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A finial can match the approved silhouette but have a base that rocks on the ridge or fixing holes that cannot be reached after installation. Thin necks and projecting points can crack in transit, while colour differences become conspicuous against matching ridge tiles.

Reduce these risks with an approved trial assembly, a retained colour sample and packing designed around the actual projections. Check frost evidence before production and inspect the base and neck after unpacking, rather than accepting an undamaged outer carton as proof of an undamaged finial.
