Duty on architectural door handles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8302 covers base-metal mountings and fittings, including fittings for building doors. Architectural lever handles, pull handles and door knobs should be checked against 8302 41 10 00. The table separates handle styles within this same commodity line.

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China on this line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The authorised-use suspension elsewhere in the heading concerns luggage handles, not architectural door handles.

Confirm the commodity code from the material, intended use and contents of the shipment, particularly if locks are included. For the wider heading, see furniture handles, hinges and drawer runners.

Specify the handle and the door together

Specify the base metal and grade, solid or hollow construction, lever or pull shape, rose or backplate dimensions, fixing centres, spindle section and length, door thickness and handing. State whether the handle is sprung and identify the latch or lock it must operate. Approve a fitted sample using the intended door and latch.

Consumer products supplied in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. Check grip surfaces, sharp edges and loose parts. For fire-door or escape-door applications, obtain specialist review of the proposed handle and assembly evidence before ordering. Treat construction-product marking as a product-specific question: government guidance recommends professional advice on the operator's status and obligations.

Agree finish colour and texture against a retained sample, corrosion testing suitable for the intended location, fixing material and installation instructions. List spindles, screws, sleeves and covers in the packing specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 2,000 architectural door handle sets, illustrative only under 8302 41 10 00, invoiced at £7,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,600, so it is £1,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure spindle dimensions, fixing centres and door-thickness compatibility; assemble sampled handles with the intended latch.

Operation: check lever return, play, rubbing and latch engagement; tighten fixings and check that roses and backplates sit flat.

Finish: compare handles and covers with the approved sample; inspect plating, coating, edges and visible joints.

Packing: check that each set contains the agreed spindle and fixings, installation instructions and protection against surface rubbing.

What goes wrong

A handle can match the drawing visually but fail to operate the latch because its spindle or spring arrangement differs. Fixing screws can clash with the lock case, covers can work loose, and mixed batches can have visibly different finishes. Record the fitted sample and component list before approving production.

Do not accept a generic test report as evidence for a different handle model or door assembly. Match the report to the supplied construction and intended application, and inspect before shipment. See quality inspection explained.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on architectural door handles from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for base-metal building-door fittings under 8302 41 10 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

What dimensions should I send the handle factory?

Send door thickness, spindle section and length, fixing centres, rose or backplate dimensions, handing and the latch or lock details. Approve a sample fitted to the intended assembly.

Can I use the same handle on a fire door?

Obtain specialist review of the exact handle and proposed door assembly before ordering. A matching appearance or a report for another model is insufficient purchasing evidence.

How do I prevent mismatched handle finishes?

Keep an approved finish sample and compare levers, roses, backplates and covers against it. Inspect across cartons and agree how the factory will separate production batches.
