How to source down jackets from Changshu

Use Changshu's garment and down-jacket base to find candidates, then shortlist by construction, development capability and willingness to make your intended range. Arrange market or fair meetings before separate sample-room and factory appointments. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate this work through its staff in China.

What Changshu offers

Changshu's municipal government identifies the city as a garment production base with a particular strength in down jackets. Changshu Clothing City also provides a place to meet clothing sellers and compare products. Treat these as routes to finding candidates: the city's reputation does not establish a particular supplier's ability to produce your range.

The China International Down Expo has been held in Changshu, bringing together down materials, garments and home textiles. Its past presence supports using industry events for introductions, but does not confirm the next edition's location or exhibitors. Our outerwear sourcing guide covers duty, labels and garment testing; this guide focuses on finding and meeting suitable suppliers.

Match factories to the intended range

Prepare a brief covering wearer, fit, intended use, shell and lining, down composition, fill power, fill weight by size, quilting, trims and care expectations. Include expected quantities by style, colour and size, your target cost basis and launch window. Ask candidates to identify constraints before arranging a visit.

Ask to see comparable garments they actually made and to explain their role in making them. Establish whether the contact represents a factory, a brand or a trader, where production happens and which operations are subcontracted. A supplier selling finished stock may not offer own-label development.

Book market or fair meetings with a purpose

For Clothing City meetings, ask contacts to confirm their market, shop address and relevant sample availability. Use the visit to compare construction and establish who can introduce you to the actual maker. Record the supplier identity and sample reference together, rather than collecting photographs without a traceable contact.

For a trade fair, confirm the current organiser's dates, venue, visitor arrangements and exhibitor list before booking travel. Send shortlisted exhibitors your brief and arrange appointments with someone able to discuss development and production. Reserve separate appointments afterwards for sample rooms and factories; a stand conversation cannot establish production capability.

Turn introductions into development appointments

Send the same specification to each shortlisted maker so quotations describe comparable garments. Ask what is included, which materials remain provisional, who buys the down and how material changes are approved. Agree sample charges, revision responsibilities and the point at which the production schedule can be confirmed. Use our factory sample brief guide to organise the development pack.

At the sample-room appointment, review patterns, measurements, grading, baffles and fill allocation with the people doing the work. Record each requested change against a named sample version. Agree what evidence will support fill and performance claims, then use the garment size-set guide before authorising bulk cutting.

Check the proposed production route

At the factory appointment, trace the proposed route through cutting, sewing, filling, finishing and packing. Ask to see filling equipment, fill-weight records, material identification and controls separating different down batches. Check how the factory detects uneven filling and leakage, handles rejected pieces and controls outsourced work. View current work where possible, alongside showroom samples.

Leave with an agreed record of the production site, outstanding sample changes, testing plan, quotation assumptions and next approval step. Keep bulk approval conditional on the agreed evidence. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate meetings and follow-up; send the range brief and visit objectives so appointments address your actual buying decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Changshu a good place to source down jackets?

It is a garment production base with a recognised down-jacket specialism. Shortlist individual suppliers against your range; the location alone does not demonstrate their capability.

Can I find down-jacket factories at Changshu Clothing City?

Use market meetings to find contacts and compare products. Establish whether each seller is the maker, then arrange a separate appointment at the proposed production site.

Which Changshu trade fair should I visit?

Consider the China International Down Expo when its current location and exhibitor list suit your brief. Confirm arrangements with the organiser before booking travel.

What should I send a down-jacket factory before visiting?

Send your garment specification, reference samples or drawings, size range, colour split, expected quantities, target cost basis and launch window. Ask for comparable work and a clear meeting agenda.
