Solar thermal from China: installer checks
Before ordering, ask your UK installer to review the exact collector, cylinder, hydraulic layout, safety devices and roof mounting design. Get written acceptance of the proposed system and confirmation of its approval route. Factory documents can be gathered for that review by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the proposed installation
Solar thermal collectors heat water. Give your installer the collector drawings, installation manual, proposed hydraulic diagram and site details before paying a deposit. Specify whether you are buying collectors alone or a complete package, including any roof-mounted tank. Ask for a written list of accepted components and unresolved questions.
The renewable equipment sourcing guide covers supplier documentation and support. This checklist adds the installation checks specific to solar hot water. Request exact-model thermal performance, pressure, durability and mounting test reports; use how to verify a product test report to check their scope.
Confirm compatibility with your cylinder
Send the installer your cylinder's model, manual and connection layout. Ask whether it is vented or unvented, whether its manufacturer accepts solar input, and whether the available coil can transfer the proposed collector output. Have the installer check coil position, heat-transfer capacity, storage capacity, sensor pockets and integration with the boiler or immersion heater.
Ask for a decision on retaining the cylinder, replacing it with a solar-compatible cylinder, or using a designed external heat exchanger arrangement. Include backup heating and a stored-water hygiene strategy. England's Approved Document G advises that an additional heat source should be available where solar water heating is used.
Review pressure protection as separate circuits
Ask the installer to identify the collector circuit and the domestic hot-water circuit separately. Compare each component's working pressure and temperature ratings with the design conditions. Request an expansion-vessel calculation, relief-valve selection and a safe discharge layout for each circuit where applicable. A collector pressure test does not establish the safety of the assembled system.
For an unvented cylinder, ask someone competent in unvented hot-water systems to review the complete safety arrangement, including independent overtemperature protection, expansion provision and discharge pipework. Ask how filling connections prevent contamination of the drinking-water supply. The plumber checks guide explains water-fitting evidence and backflow assessment.
Plan for overheating and loss of power
Ask what happens during strong sunshine when the cylinder is already hot, the premises are empty or the pump loses power. Request the collector's stagnation data and the manufacturer's intended protection method. Have the installer check expansion capacity, steam behaviour, pump placement and the temperature suitability of seals, insulation and heat-transfer fluid.
Ask how the design limits cylinder overheating and scalding at outlets. Have the installer explain whether stopping circulation is safe for this collector and hydraulic arrangement. Agree any drainback or heat-dissipation strategy, frost protection, fluid maintenance and restart procedure. Keep the explanation with the commissioning instructions.
Check roof loads and the mounting design
Request filled operating weights for collectors, frames, pipework and any roof-mounted tank. Give the roof assessor the proposed layout and fixing drawings. Ask them to assess roof condition, concentrated loads, wind uplift, snow loading and the load path into the supporting structure. Include any ballast in the assessment.
Have the installer confirm that brackets suit the actual roof covering and structure. Agree fixing locations, corrosion compatibility, weatherproof penetrations and maintenance access. Put the accepted mounting kit and drawings in the product specification, and prohibit substitutions without a fresh review.

Agree the approval route before purchase
For an installation in England, confirm whether an appropriately registered competent person can self-certify the work or whether a building control application is needed. GOV.UK explains that scheme-registered installers can self-certify compliance. Check that the installer's registration covers the proposed solar thermal and cylinder work. Building regulations approval and planning permission are separate; you might need both.
For Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the relevant local authority to confirm the route for the site. Separately, ask your installer and product compliance adviser which product rules, conformity documents and any scheme listings apply to the exact package. Agree who handles applications, commissioning and completion records. Make purchase conditional on resolving these questions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my existing hot-water cylinder?
Ask your installer to check the exact cylinder model, manufacturer acceptance, solar coil capacity, sensor positions and backup heating. Get a written decision before choosing the collectors.
Will switching off the pump prevent overheating?
Ask your installer to assess stagnation and steam behaviour. Stopping circulation leaves the collectors exposed to sunshine; the complete system needs a planned response to heat and power loss.
Can my roof support solar thermal collectors?
Give a roof assessor filled equipment weights, mounting drawings and the proposed layout. Ask for an assessment of the structure, fixing loads, wind uplift and snow, including any roof-mounted tank.
Does a factory certificate approve the installation?
Use it as product evidence for review. Ask your installer to confirm the site-specific building control and planning route, any scheme conditions, and the commissioning records you will receive.
