Getting started

Can UK sellers share product testing costs?

Yes, potentially, if the laboratory confirms that the samples and testing scope support each seller's actual product, and agrees how each can use the evidence. Agree identities, brand coverage, report access and costs before testing; each seller keeps its compliance responsibilities. Factory coordination can be arranged through Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree the shared work before paying

Ask the laboratory for a written proposal naming each seller, the factory, intended markets and products supplied under each brand. Ask whether shared testing is technically suitable and whether its terms permit each seller to use the resulting evidence. Treat technical coverage and permission to use reports as separate questions.

Agree who commissions the work, who approves changes and how invoices are allocated. Separate shared testing from seller-specific artwork reviews, report amendments and additional tests. Record what happens if a seller withdraws, a sample fails or the factory changes the product. Use our testing budget guide for the wider cost plan.

Prove which product the samples represent

Give the laboratory a comparison sheet linking the factory model and specification revision to each seller's model and brand. Include materials, components, coatings, accessories, instructions and intended use. Ask the assessor to identify differences that prevent shared coverage, using our variant coverage guide.

Agree sample selection and identification before dispatch. Keep photographs, labels, dispatch records and the laboratory's receipt record together. Ask the report to describe the specimens actually received and tested. If an unbranded factory sample is proposed, obtain a written explanation of how it represents each finished branded product, including any relevant printing or coating differences.

Confirm brand coverage with the issuer

Ask how the report will distinguish the commissioning client, factory, tested model and seller brands. Request a written mapping from each seller's product identifier to the tested specification. Ask whether the laboratory will issue a shared report, separate reports or a supported addendum, and what each document establishes.

Listing another brand is not a substitute for assessing its product. Do not edit the report or add names yourself. Confirm any amendment with the issuer and check authenticity using our report verification guide. Ask your intended marketplace or customer what documents it will accept before choosing the report format.

Secure independent access to the evidence

Agree that each seller receives the complete final report, coverage assessment and subsequent amendments directly, including relevant failures and limitations. Clarify permission to retain copies and disclose them to advisers, customers, marketplaces and enforcement authorities. Ask whether laboratory verification requests need the commissioning client's consent and arrange that consent in advance.

Agree how confidential factory information will be handled without leaving either seller unable to obtain evidence needed for its product. Record access arrangements if the commissioning seller stops trading or the relationship ends. Specify who receives failure notices, who can authorise retesting, and how sample retention or disposal will be handled.

Keep each seller's compliance work separate

Businesses making, importing, distributing or selling consumer products in the UK remain responsible for their safety. For products within the UKCA or CE regimes in Great Britain, manufacturers remain responsible for risk assessment, identifying relevant requirements and documenting how they are addressed. Sharing a laboratory invoice does not transfer these responsibilities. Confirm with the relevant product safety authority whether an own-brand seller is treated as a manufacturer; the site's e-commerce guidance can help you prepare that enquiry.

Before selling, have a competent adviser confirm each seller's role and product-specific duties. Keep your own approved specification, coverage mapping, reports, label artwork and applicable conformity documents using our compliance-file guide. Agree prompt notification of substitutions, test failures and safety concerns, with each seller deciding its own stock action. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate factory details and sample identification.

Frequently asked questions

Can another seller and I split a laboratory bill?

Potentially. Ask the laboratory to confirm shared technical coverage, permitted report use and deliverables first. Agree cost allocation, withdrawal, failures and retesting before paying.

Can the same test report cover different brands?

Possibly, with a documented link between each branded product and the tested specification. Ask the issuer to confirm coverage and the report format; adding brand names alone does not establish coverage.

What if the report is only in the other seller's name?

Ask the laboratory for written permission and arrangements for your use, complete copies and direct verification. Do not rely on a forwarded report without confirming coverage and access with the issuer.

Does shared testing remove my compliance duties?

No. Each seller retains the duties attached to its role and product. Keep your own evidence and have an adviser check whether you act as manufacturer, importer or distributor.
