Getting started

Can I put security spikes on my garden fence?

Only proceed after resolving fence ownership and permissions and having the actual site assessed for injury risks. Where children or passers-by could reach the topping, choose a safer security measure. Coordinate factory drawings and samples with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish who owns the fence

For England and Wales, government guidance says most title plans do not show exact boundaries. There is also no rule that the fence on the left or right belongs to that property owner. Check the title documents, purchase papers and any boundary agreements before choosing fixings.

As a purchasing precaution, obtain written agreement from the fence owner before attaching anything to their fence. For a shared or disputed fence, resolve authority to alter it before ordering. If renting, send the landlord or managing agent the proposed design and ask for written confirmation of what they authorise.

Check permissions for the complete proposal

Send the local planning authority photographs and a drawing showing the existing fence, proposed topping, finished overall height, ground levels and nearby roads or paths. Ask whether the complete alteration needs planning permission and whether listed-property or local restrictions affect it. Obtain advice before authorising production.

Ask your property adviser to check the deeds, lease and any restrictions on alterations. Treat the owner's agreement and the planning enquiry as separate checkpoints. Our garden structure permissions guide explains how to prepare information for local review. For Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, start with the relevant local authority and local legal advice.

Assess children and people outside the garden

Walk the boundary with the installer from both sides. Mark pavements, shared access, school routes, play areas, delivery approaches and places where someone might steady themselves against the fence. Include raised ground, nearby walls, bins and furniture that make the topping easier to reach.

Consider a child retrieving a ball, a visitor falling against the fence and a passer-by catching clothing or a hand. Assess plastic points as well as metal spikes. Avoid exposed sharp topping where accidental contact is foreseeable. Never test safety by asking someone to climb, grab or fall onto a sample.

Get occupiers' liability and insurance advice

Government guidance states that an occupier owes a common duty of care to visitors. For an England or Wales site, ask a solicitor to assess the proposed topping and potential liability involving visitors, children, trespassers and people using the adjoining pavement. Provide photographs, access arrangements and any history of climbing or attempted entry.

Do not assume trespassing removes the need for legal review. Ask specifically about warnings and physical precautions for the actual site; do not treat a warning sign as approval to install spikes. Send the proposal to your insurer and ask about cover, exclusions and conditions before buying. Obtain local legal advice for a site elsewhere in the UK.

Have the installer assess the exact product

Ask a competent fencing or security installer for a written assessment before ordering. It should address the fence's condition, post stability, fixing strength, projection beyond the boundary, accessible edges, corrosion, maintenance access and how damaged topping would be removed safely. Ask whether they recommend a different security measure.

Obtain factory drawings, material and coating details, fixing instructions and a representative sample. Match the approved design to the delivered goods using our pre-payment checklist. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate these checks; suitability for the garden needs assessment at the actual site.

Compare safer ways to secure the boundary

Start with repairing weak panels and posts, improving gate locks and hinges, and moving bins or furniture that provide climbing access. Ask the installer to compare smooth fencing, carefully positioned trellis or planting, and a professionally designed topping without exposed sharp points. Assess each option for access, maintenance and accidental contact.

Consider lighting as part of the wider security plan, using our garden security lighting guide to assess effects on neighbours. Keep the agreed drawings, permissions, installer assessment, insurer response and installation photographs together. Arrange checks for loose fixings, broken points and changed access conditions, with prompt isolation or removal of hazardous parts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attach spikes to my neighbour's fence?

Establish ownership first. As a purchasing precaution, obtain the owner's written agreement to the exact alteration. Resolve disputed ownership before ordering or drilling.

Do fence spikes need planning permission?

Ask the local planning authority about the complete alteration, including the topping and finished overall height. Provide drawings, ground levels and details of nearby roads or paths.

Does a warning sign make fence spikes safe to fit?

Do not treat a sign as installation approval. Ask your solicitor and installer to assess warnings, access and physical precautions, especially where children or passers-by could reach the topping.

Are plastic anti-climb spikes safe near children?

Do not assume plastic points are harmless. Have the installer assess reach, falling and climbing risks. Where accidental contact is foreseeable, choose a measure without exposed sharp points.
