How to check a product's security update period
Verify the published support period and end date for the exact model, match them to its statement of compliance, and ask who will deliver updates. Assess remaining support against the likely customer sale date, then test the update route before ordering. Arrange these checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Find the published promise for the exact model
For products within the UK consumer connectable product security regime, the defined support period must be published and means a minimum period with an end date. Start with our connectable product compliance guide for scope and compliance documents. Here, the buying question is whether the promised support matches your actual product and sales plan.
Ask for the manufacturer's public support page, then match its model identifier to the quotation, hardware revision, firmware and statement of compliance. Save the page with the date you checked it. Treat 'lifetime updates', 'regular updates' or a warranty period as unresolved until the supplier provides a clear security support period and end date.
Check that buyers can find the information
The published information must be clear and accessible in English, free of charge, without a prior request or provision of personal information, and understandable without technical knowledge. Open the page as a visitor. Check whether the relevant model can be found without contacting sales or creating an account.
Compare the public promise with the statement and your purchase specification. The published support period cannot be shortened; an extension must be published as soon as practicable. If the dates differ, ask the manufacturer to explain and reconcile them before paying. Keep earlier versions rather than replacing your evidence with an undated screenshot.
Establish who can actually deliver updates
Ask the supplier to identify who maintains the device firmware, companion application and cloud service. Request written confirmation that their support arrangements cover the promised period, including dependence on component suppliers or software contractors. For your own brand, confirm that the public promise and update arrangements cover your branded model rather than only the factory's catalogue version.
Agree who assesses vulnerabilities, develops and tests fixes, authorises releases and tells customers how to install them. Ask what happens if a contractor changes or a cloud service closes. Request release history and demonstrate an available update on the proposed sample. A successful demonstration checks the current delivery route; it does not prove future support.
Assess stock against the customer sale date
Compare the published end date with your expected customer sale date, allowing for production, shipping, storage and slow sales. Where support ends on a fixed calendar date, do not assume that your purchase, shipment or the customer's activation starts a fresh period. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the date applicable to each model and batch.
Set your own minimum acceptable remaining support at customer sale and a stock review point before it becomes too short. Agree what happens to delayed or unsold stock: a published extension, replacement with a supported model, or cancellation under agreed terms. For clearance goods, use our stock lot checks alongside this support assessment.
Make support evidence a purchase checkpoint
Attach the agreed model, published support page, end date and update responsibilities to the purchase specification. Ask for written buyer approval before substitutions affecting hardware, firmware, the application or cloud service. Before dispatch, reconcile the actual goods with those records and repeat the update check where relevant. Our balance payment checklist covers the wider release checks.
Recheck the public page before listing the goods and during stock reviews. Keep the support promise separate from warranties, spare parts and cloud subscriptions, and ask about each separately. Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to obtain supplier records and coordinate sample checks; specialist security assessment needs a separate technical brief.
Frequently asked questions
Does a product warranty prove security update support?
No. Ask for the published security support period and end date for the exact model. Check warranties, repairs and cloud access separately.
Does security support restart when my customer buys?
Do not assume so. If the promise ends on a fixed calendar date, assess the support remaining at customer sale and obtain written confirmation for the model and batch.
Can a manufacturer shorten its published support period?
The published defined support period cannot be shortened. If it is extended, the new period must be published as soon as practicable. Save the earlier promise and check any changed dates.
What should I ask a Chinese supplier about updates?
Ask who maintains the firmware, application and cloud service, whether their arrangements cover the published period, how fixes reach customers, and what happens if a provider stops supporting the product.
