Getting started

Buying an electric fence energiser from China

Check evidence for the exact energiser and power supply, then have the proposed fence assessed for animal suitability, earthing, installation hazards and public access. Agree warning signs and safe crossings before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge can gather the factory documents through its staff in China.

Define the animal enclosure before choosing a model

Send the supplier a drawing showing the animals kept, fence route, conductor material, strands or netting, gates, nearby fences and available power supply. Include vegetation, soil conditions, weather exposure and who might approach the fence. Put these details into your product specification, rather than asking for a model suitable for a small field.

Ask an experienced animal-fencing installer to assess containment, entanglement and escape risks for the species concerned. Specify an animal-fence energiser and ask the supplier to confirm its intended use in writing. Ask Trading Standards or a product compliance adviser which product rules apply to your intended hobby use; our own-use import guide explains that separate question.

Match conformity evidence to the supplied equipment

Request the declaration of conformity, complete safety and electromagnetic compatibility test reports, rating-label photographs and English instructions for the exact model. Include the supplied adaptor, charger, battery or solar assembly in the review. Our electrical import guide covers the general importer, marking and documentation duties.

Ask a product compliance specialist to identify the applicable energiser-specific safety standard and edition, and check whether the reports address pulse output, isolation, abnormal operation and installation instructions. Match report photographs and component details to the ordered configuration. Use our test-report verification guide to check authenticity and coverage. A CE or UKCA logo cannot establish suitability for your fence.

Check performance against the proposed fence

Ask the supplier to explain its advertised fence range: conductor type, total conductor length, vegetation contact, earthing and test conditions. Request output energy and voltage under stated loads, with an explanation distinguishing stored energy from energy delivered to the fence. Have the installer assess those results against your layout rather than choosing by the largest headline rating.

Obtain written compatibility advice for tape, wire or netting, lead-out cables, connectors, insulators, gates and any fence monitor. For battery or solar operation, ask how charging and seasonal conditions affect the proposed setup. Include isolation, fault detection, maintenance and replacement parts in the specification before accepting a sample.

Assess installation before energising the fence

Arrange a site assessment covering the power supply, energiser mounting, weather protection, earthing, cable routes and safe isolation. Ask the installer to resolve separation from other earthing systems and nearby fences using the model instructions. Avoid improvised connections, direct mains connections to fence wire or combining energisers on a fence circuit.

HSE advises assessing electrical hazards before work near electricity. Locate overhead lines and buried services before planning posts, earth stakes or cable trenches. Have a competent installer review the layout and demonstrate testing with suitable fence equipment. Record the initial readings and agree how faults, vegetation contact and damaged components will be checked.

Plan public access, crossings and warning signs

Map public paths, roads, neighbouring access, gates and places children or visitors might touch the fence. Ask the local access authority to clarify any uncertain route or crossing before installation. Plan passage without touching or climbing electrified conductors. For England and Wales, the Countryside Code advises plain wire where the public is likely to contact a fence, gate or stile.

Include durable electric-fence warning signs in the order and agree their wording, visibility and positions with the installer. Place warnings where people approach, including entrances and crossings, and check visibility from each approach. Ask the installer to specify sign dimensions and spacing for the applicable instructions and site. Signs should accompany a safe layout; inspect them for fading, damage and obstruction.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CE certificate enough for a Chinese fence energiser?

No. Match the declaration, complete test reports, label and instructions to the exact energiser and supplied power equipment. Have a specialist review the applicable requirements and report coverage.

Can I choose an energiser by its advertised fence range?

Ask for the conditions behind the range claim. Compare the actual conductor layout, vegetation, earthing and loaded output with your proposed fence through an experienced installer.

Where should electric fence warning signs go?

Plan visible warnings at approaches, entrances and crossings. Ask the installer to confirm positions, dimensions and spacing against the model instructions and site conditions.

Can I install an imported energiser myself for hobby animals?

Have the equipment and site assessed before use, especially the supply, earthing, buried services and public access. Hobby use alone does not settle the product compliance question.
