Getting started

Safe e-bike and e-scooter charging at home

Before buying, choose storage and charging away from escape routes, confirm the manufacturer-approved battery and charger combination, and plan charging while awake and present. Stop use for damage or warning signs; if smoke appears, leave and call 999. Discuss supplier checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Decide where it will live before ordering

Walk through the home and identify where the vehicle and any removable battery will be stored and charged. Keep bedrooms, hallways, doorways and shared escape routes out of the plan. Ask whether a fire at the proposed location would prevent anyone reaching an exit. If you cannot identify a suitable location, hold the purchase.

Consider a shed or garage separate from the home, provided its conditions suit the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid damp, extreme temperatures and nearby combustible materials. Plan suitable fire detection and make sure everyone knows how to escape. For stock lots, use our stock-lot buying guide to investigate condition and history before treating a battery as unused. For general household equipment, see our guide to China-bought fire extinguishers and fire blankets.

Approve the complete battery and charger combination

Use the supplied charger or a manufacturer-authorised replacement. For a replacement battery from China, obtain the vehicle or drive-system manufacturer's confirmation of the exact battery and charger combination. A matching connector or a seller's claim that a pack is universal does not establish compatibility.

Request model identifiers, label photographs, instructions and written compatibility confirmation before paying. Have a competent specialist review electrical specifications if anything is unclear; do not experiment with adaptors or altered wiring. Our charger safety guide covers charger assessment, while our conversion-kit guide addresses fitting decisions.

Make charging fit your daily routine

Plan charging for a time when someone is awake, present and able to respond. Do not leave it unattended, charge overnight while sleeping, or leave it charging when going out. Unplug when fully charged and follow the manufacturer's instructions. A timer or smart plug does not replace supervision.

Let a battery that is hot after use cool before charging. Keep the battery and charger uncovered, away from combustible materials, and avoid overloaded sockets or damaged leads. For a removable battery, use a hard, flat surface where heat can disperse. Follow the manufacturer's storage instructions during periods without use.

Recognise when to stop using it

Stop using or charging a battery or charger showing extreme heat, swelling, lumps, leaks, hissing or cracking sounds, or a strong unusual smell. Failure to charge fully or charging that takes longer than usual also needs investigation. Suspected damage after a drop or crash is a reason to stop, even without visible swelling.

If there is no smoke or fire, switch off and unplug only if safe, and contact the manufacturer or retailer for instructions. Do not recharge it to see whether the problem repeats, open the pack or attempt repairs yourself. Agree a supplier contact and a process for reporting faults before ordering.

Plan the emergency response and purchase handover

If the battery or vehicle smokes or catches fire, alert everyone, get out, stay out and call 999 immediately. Do not try to extinguish the battery fire or carry a smoking pack through the home. Arrange disposal of a failed battery through the retailer, manufacturer or local authority rather than household rubbish or normal recycling.

Before approving the order, record the agreed models, authorised replacements, instructions, charging location and fault contact. For business purchases, make these part of the customer handover information and ask our China staff to reconcile the agreed specification with the supplied goods. Keep the stock-lot buying guide available when assessing clearance or returned stock.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge an e-bike battery overnight?

Do not charge while asleep or leave charging unattended. Choose a time when you are awake and present, follow the manufacturer's instructions and unplug when fully charged.

Can I use another charger if the plug fits?

A fitting connector does not prove compatibility. Use the supplied charger or a manufacturer-authorised replacement confirmed for the exact battery.

Where should I store an e-scooter at home?

Choose somewhere away from escape routes and combustible materials, following the manufacturer's storage instructions. Consider a separate shed or garage if its conditions are suitable.

What should I do if my e-bike battery starts smoking?

Alert everyone, get out, stay out and call 999 immediately. Do not try to extinguish the battery fire or move the smoking pack through the home.
