Getting started

Buying a gas appliance from China for your home

Before paying, ask a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered installer to review the exact appliance and your home. Agree the certification evidence, gas type and pressure, flue and ventilation plan, and conditions for safe commissioning. Seek written advice before ordering through Cambridge China Bridge.

Find an installer who can assess the actual appliance

Anyone employed to work on gas appliances in domestic premises must be Gas Safe registered and competent in that area of gas work. Before choosing a supplier, ask the installer to confirm their registration and qualifications for the appliance category and fuel concerned. Check their registration and card rather than relying on a general plumbing qualification.

Arrange a site assessment and send the exact model specification, data-plate photograph and proposed location. Ask whether the installer is willing to install and commission that model, what evidence they need and what would make them refuse. A preliminary opinion should state its conditions; it cannot guarantee acceptance of goods that have not arrived.

Review certification before accepting the quotation

Ask the installer and a product-compliance specialist to review the declaration of conformity, conformity-assessment certificates, model coverage and relevant test reports. Match the manufacturer, model, gas variant and supplied components across the documents. CE marking remains recognised for gas appliances in England, Scotland and Wales, but a photograph of a mark does not resolve your evidence checks. Request a destination-specific review for Northern Ireland.

Use our gas certification guide for the detailed assessment checks. Instructions must be clear, legible and in easily understandable English. Obtain the installation, use and servicing manuals before purchase. If buying clearance or old stock, also follow our stock-lot buying guide to establish the actual batch and its history.

Match the appliance to your home's gas supply

Have the installer identify the actual fuel and supply conditions at your property. Ask them to compare these with the appliance category, gas type, supply pressure and settings in the manufacturer's documentation. Request a written conclusion for the exact variant offered, rather than accepting a supplier's statement that it is suitable for the UK.

If conversion is proposed, obtain the manufacturer's instructions, specified conversion components and confirmation that the resulting configuration is covered by the reviewed evidence. Ask the installer whether they can perform and verify that conversion. Do not approve a purchase on the assumption that changing injectors, a regulator or a connector will settle every compatibility issue.

Agree the flue and ventilation plan on site

Ask the installer to establish whether the appliance needs a flue and which complete flue system the manufacturer specifies. Review the route, terminal position, nearby openings, clearances and access for inspection and servicing. Have them assess any existing chimney or flue before assuming it can be reused. Confirm that the specified components can actually be obtained.

Ask for a ventilation assessment covering combustion air, permanent openings, room use and the effect of extractor fans or other appliances. For an appliance without a flue, ask how its combustion products are managed in the proposed room. Have the installer identify any building work, permissions or notifications to investigate before ordering, with responsibility for each recorded.

Make installation acceptance a purchase condition

Record the reviewed model, documents, gas configuration, flue components, ventilation work and unresolved conditions in the purchase specification. Use our fitting-document guide to organise the supplier's submission. Agree that changes to the model or components go back to the installer for review, and establish what happens if the delivered appliance cannot be accepted.

A Gas Safe registered engineer must fit and check the gas appliance. Engage the installer for that work from the outset. Agree the commissioning checks, handover records and any applicable completion paperwork before buying. Ask who will provide servicing information and replacement parts. If the installer will not accept the proposed evidence or installation plan, hold the order.

Frequently asked questions

Can a UK installer fit a gas appliance bought from China?

Ask a suitably qualified Gas Safe registered installer to assess the exact model and your property before buying. Their willingness to proceed should depend on the documents, gas compatibility and installation plan.

Does a CE mark mean my installer will accept it?

Do not treat the mark as a promise of installation acceptance. Ask for the model-specific conformity documents and have the installer review gas compatibility, instructions, flue and ventilation.

Can a Chinese gas appliance be converted to my gas supply?

Ask for manufacturer-supported conversion instructions, specified components and evidence covering the converted configuration. Have the installer confirm whether they can convert and verify the exact model before ordering.

What if the installer refuses the appliance after delivery?

Hold installation and obtain the reasons in writing. Establish whether the supplier can resolve the document or product mismatch. Agree remedies before purchase; do not assume another installer will accept it.
