Getting started

Will roof tiles from China suit my home?

They may suit your home, but ask your roofer to accept the exact product and roof build-up before ordering. Check pitch, structural loading, weather exposure and fixings, then resolve building-control and warranty evidence separately. Factory documents can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the roofer's assessment before ordering

Give your roofer the site address, roof survey, measured pitch, existing covering and proposed product details. Ask for written acceptance identifying the tile or sheet, installation instructions and any conditions. A photograph or a supplier's claim that it suits British homes is too little to base an order on.

Request samples alongside drawings and performance documents. Have the roofer check tile interlocks, sheet profiles, usable cover width and compatible ridge, verge and flashing details. Our construction materials guide covers product conformity paperwork; this guide focuses on whether the proposed roof assembly suits your home.

Check pitch and structural loading

Ask the manufacturer for the permitted pitch range and the installation conditions behind it, including overlaps, support spacing and underlay. Have the roofer compare these with the actual roof and its exposure. If the pitch falls outside the documented application, pause the purchase rather than relying on extra sealant or a verbal assurance.

England's Approved Document A covers building loading and structural elements, including roofs. Ask the roofer whether a structural engineer should assess the change. Compare the installed covering weight, battens, insulation and accessories, and consider wind uplift, snow and maintenance loads. A lighter sheet is not enough evidence that the proposed assembly is suitable.

Review weather resistance and fixings together

Ask for evidence relevant to the material: frost resistance for tiles, corrosion and coating durability for metal sheets, and water penetration through the proposed joints. Have the roofer review wind-driven rain, coastal exposure, condensation, ventilation and drainage around valleys and penetrations. Check that reports identify the exact material, profile, thickness and finish; see verifying product test reports.

England's Approved Document C says each sheet, tile and roof section should be fixed appropriately. Request a fixing schedule for your site, including roof edges and corners, with named clips, screws, washers and supporting materials. Ask the roofer to check corrosion compatibility, thermal movement and replacement availability. Do not substitute generic fixings after the assembly has been accepted.

Resolve building-control evidence for the project

For an English project, official guidance says to check whether approval is needed before constructing or changing buildings in certain ways. Before buying, ask the relevant building-control body about your roof work and the evidence it expects. For homes elsewhere in the UK, confirm the applicable route locally rather than assuming the English guidance applies.

Prepare a project file containing the product declaration, relevant test reports, roof drawings, loading assessment where needed, fixing schedule and installation instructions. Ask which inspections and completion documents to arrange. Keep written responses against the exact specification; our construction materials submittal guide explains how to organise the approval pack.

Agree warranty acceptance and release the order

If a building warranty applies, send its provider the proposed roof specification before paying a deposit. Ask for written acceptance and any conditions on materials, installers, inspection or maintenance. Separately ask the roofer what workmanship cover they offer and the supplier what its product warranty covers. Read exclusions and ask who pays for scaffolding, removal and reinstatement; see self-build warranty checks.

Release the order after the technical questions and applicable approval and warranty conditions are resolved. Record the accepted specification and require agreement before changes to material, coating, profile or fixings. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can gather factory documents and check supplied goods against that specification. Keep batch records, delivery checks and installation photographs with the roof file.

Frequently asked questions

Can my roofer fit roof tiles bought from China?

Ask before ordering. Give the roofer samples, product drawings, installation instructions and performance evidence, then obtain written acceptance for your home's roof.

What minimum roof pitch do Chinese tiles need?

There is no useful blanket answer. Ask for the exact product's documented pitch range and installation conditions, then have your roofer compare them with the measured roof and exposure.

Does CE marking mean roofing suits my house?

CE marking does not establish suitability for your particular roof. Ask the roofer to review pitch, loading, exposure and the complete fixing arrangement alongside the product documents.

Will my warranty cover imported roofing sheets?

Ask the warranty provider to confirm acceptance of the exact specification in writing before buying. Check product and workmanship cover separately, including removal and reinstatement costs.
