Prepaid and virtual cards: buying from China
Yes, using prepaid funds can change your protection. A virtual card describes how you pay, so check whether it uses prepaid funds, a debit account or credit. Ask the issuer which dispute route covers your business order and how refunds reach replaced cards. Supplier records can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify what sits behind the card
Prepaid and virtual describe different features. Prepaid describes spending funds loaded in advance; virtual describes card details used without a physical card. Open the account agreement and card terms, then ask the issuer to confirm whether your particular virtual card uses a prepaid balance, a debit account or a credit agreement. Do not infer the answer from a card-network logo or a checkout option labelled 'credit card'.
Record the card product, legal issuer, account holder and support contact. Ask whether the app provider is also the issuer and who handles purchase disputes. Keep the issuer's written classification with your order file. Use our guide to paying Chinese suppliers safely for the wider payment plan.
Separate statutory credit protection from chargeback
Section 75 provides a claim against the creditor for supplier misrepresentation or breach of contract where its conditions are met. Do not treat spending a prepaid balance as equivalent to borrowing on an eligible credit card. For a virtual card linked to credit, ask the issuer to assess the actual credit agreement and transaction rather than relying on the word 'virtual'.
Chargeback operates under card-scheme rules and is separate from statutory credit protection. Ask whether your prepaid, debit or credit product supports a chargeback for the proposed purchase. State whether the account holder and contracting buyer are an individual or a company, and explain the business purpose. Request a product-specific answer rather than relying on general consumer guidance.
Get dispute arrangements confirmed before paying
Give the issuer the proposed seller, goods, payment route and delivery commitment. Ask how it handles non-delivery, goods that differ from the agreed specification and a promised refund that does not arrive. Request the reporting channel, required documents, applicable submission deadline and event that starts it. Ask about fees and whether any credit during the investigation is provisional.
Distinguish payment for goods from loading funds into a card or platform wallet. Ask which transaction the issuer would assess if the supplier fails to perform. Our guide to marketplace card disputes explains how to connect the payment recipient to the supplier order.
Check refunds after card details change
Before using a disposable or temporary virtual card, ask how the issuer receives a merchant refund after its number changes, expires or is deleted. Ask separately what happens if the underlying account is closed. Request confirmation of where the money would be credited, how you would access it and what to do if the refund cannot be matched.
Keep the original transaction receipt, the card identifier shown on it and the issuer's reply. If the supplier says it has refunded you, request a refund receipt and any tracing reference its payment provider supplies. Ask the issuer to trace the credit against the original transaction. Confirm the received amount and currency, and disclose it in any open dispute.

Keep card controls alongside supplier checks
Use spending limits and card controls where they suit your purchasing process, but continue checking the supplier, specification and payment milestones. Confirm how later instalments will be authorised if the original virtual card is no longer usable. Keep each payment linked to its invoice and agreed production or delivery stage.
If goods arrive wrong, document the mismatch against the agreed specification before submitting a card dispute. Our guide to faulty goods from China covers the supplier claim. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China and can help gather supplier communications and inspection findings; ask the issuer to decide the available card remedy.
Frequently asked questions
Does a prepaid card give Section 75 protection?
Do not treat spending a prepaid balance as eligible credit card borrowing. Ask the issuer to confirm the underlying product and whether chargeback or another contractual dispute route covers your purchase.
Does using a virtual card remove purchase protection?
The virtual label alone does not establish your protection. Confirm the underlying prepaid, debit or credit product, then ask the issuer to assess your business purchase and payment route.
Can I get a refund to a deleted virtual card?
Ask the issuer how refunds to old card details are matched to your account. Keep the original payment receipt and obtain the supplier's refund receipt and tracing reference if the credit is missing.
What should I ask before paying a Chinese factory?
Ask who issues the card, which dispute route covers the business order, what deadline and evidence apply, and how refunds work after replacement or account closure. Keep the replies with the order.
