Can UK product labels include other languages?

Yes, a shared factory label can contain English and other languages, subject to the rules for the product and destination. Approve the wording, translations and actual printed layout together; do not treat multilingual artwork as proof of compliance. Coordinate these checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the product and destination

A multilingual label is a layout choice, not a general compliance approval. Official cosmetics guidance for Great Britain explicitly says additional languages are not prohibited for warning and precautionary information. Check the guidance for your own product rather than applying that example across every category.

Tell the factory whether the goods are for Great Britain, Northern Ireland or both. Record the intended markets beside the artwork approval. For electricals, start with our UK electrical importing guide for the wider product checks.

Check what must be in English

GOV.UK textile guidance says the label must show fibre content, including fur and other animal parts. It is a starting point for the content check, but that page does not specify the English-language wording. Resolve the applicable language requirements with a product compliance adviser before approving the textile label.

For equipment within the electrical safety rules in Great Britain, official guidance requires manufacturers to supply instructions that are clear, legible and in easily understandable English. Treat the label and accompanying instructions as separate approval items. An English product name on the label does not establish that the instructions meet this requirement.

Control translations against approved meaning

Prepare an approved English master text tied to the exact product. Place each translation beside the corresponding master passage in a review sheet. Ask a reviewer competent in the language and product to check warnings, intended use, fibre descriptions and operating terms. Use machine translation as a draft, then review it.

Record who approved each language and which master revision it follows. If the English changes, reopen every affected translation. For technical terminology shared with drawings or specifications, use our translated factory drawings guide. Ask the factory to flag unclear wording instead of silently rewriting it.

Review the printed label at actual size

Ask for a printed proof on the intended label material, attached in the intended position. Read it without enlarging a photograph. Check contrast, missing characters, line breaks, language separation and whether seams, folds or packaging obscure the text. If the languages crowd the English, revise the layout rather than automatically shrinking it.

Keep wording approval separate from print approval. A correctly translated document can still produce an unreadable label through font substitution or poor printing. Use our factory artwork approval guide for the wider print sign-off, and retain the approved physical proof for comparison.

Match production to the approved version

Create a release record linking the product variant, destination, master text, translations, artwork and printed proof. Compare the label with the carton, instruction leaflet and sales copy for conflicting descriptions or warnings. Ask the factory to withdraw superseded files and obtain approval before changing wording, material or layout.

During inspection, compare production labels with the approved proof and check that each variant carries its intended version. Record discrepancies with photographs and hold the affected goods while corrections are agreed. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory queries and physical label checks through its own staff in China; keep specialist compliance approval with the appointed reviewer.

Frequently asked questions

Can English and Chinese appear on the same UK label?

Yes, subject to the product-specific rules. Approve both texts and the printed layout together, and check that the extra language does not crowd or obscure the English.

Can I rely on the factory's translation?

Ask for a review against your approved master text by someone competent in the language and product. Record approval and recheck affected translations whenever the master changes.

Does an English label replace electrical instructions?

An English label alone does not establish compliance. Official Great Britain electrical guidance requires accompanying instructions that are clear, legible and in easily understandable English.

How do I stop old label versions being printed?

Link the approved artwork to the product variant and destination, withdraw superseded files, require approval for changes and compare production labels with the retained printed proof.
