Getting started

Can I install a hanging chair or hammock at home?

Possibly, but a stated user weight and supplied hooks do not establish installation safety. Have a competent installer assess the actual supports, movement loads and complete suspension system, involving a structural engineer where needed. Arrange factory drawings and model-specific instructions through Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish what will carry the suspension

Before ordering, ask an installer experienced in suspended seating to inspect the proposed location. Establish the supporting material, dimensions, span, connections and condition, tracing the load into the building. Plasterboard, decorative beams and ceiling battens are not evidence of an adequate support. Where capacity or construction is uncertain, ask a structural engineer experienced in existing buildings for a written assessment.

Provide the exact model, assembled weight, intended users, suspension layout and instructions. Ask whether it is designed for building suspension or only its supplied stand. Our hanging egg chair sourcing guide covers the product purchase; record installation information in your product specification. Hold installation until missing information and structural questions are resolved.

Assess movement and hammock geometry

Ask the assessor to consider the chair or hammock weight, occupants, entry and exit, swinging, twisting and foreseeable sudden loading. A user weight label is not the force acting on each fixing. Request the manufacturer's intended suspension geometry and loading assumptions; have the assessor establish the forces and directions at the supports, including repeated loading.

For a hammock, a flatter hanging arrangement increases tension at its ends. Do not tighten it merely to gain floor clearance. Agree sag, attachment height and spacing as a complete arrangement. For a chair, include spring travel and rotation where fitted. Changing the hanging angle, suspension length or connector arrangement needs review before use.

Specify anchors for the actual substrate

Have the installer and structural assessor agree the anchor type, location and installation method for the identified timber, masonry or concrete. Address withdrawal, sideways loading, splitting or breakout, anchor spacing and distance from edges. Do not assume a supplied plug suits hollow masonry, or that fixing into a joist proves the joist itself can carry the load.

Check concealed services before drilling. Obtain the anchor manufacturer's instructions for hole preparation, embedment, tightening and curing where relevant. Ask the installer to record the actual substrate, anchor identification, locations and installation checks. If the proposed fixing cannot be justified, stop and assess a manufacturer-supported stand or a designed structural alteration.

Check every connection in the suspension

Review the complete path from structure to seat: mounting plate, eye, connector, chain or rope, swivel, spring and attachment points. Ask for identifiable components with documented suitability for the intended load direction and repeated movement. A rating for an isolated component does not establish the capacity of the assembled system.

Check that connectors cannot open, unhook or unscrew during movement or temporary slack. Confirm compatible sizes, secure closure and the intended alignment, avoiding loading across a connector's gate or bending an eye sideways. Check rope abrasion, sharp edges, thread engagement and corrosion compatibility. Use manufacturer-approved components; decorative hooks and unidentified clips leave suitability unresolved.

Measure clearance throughout movement

Map the occupied chair or hammock throughout its permitted movement, including stretched fabric, spring extension and the user's head, hands and feet. Check clearance from floors, walls, glazing, furniture, heaters and doors. Include safe entry and exit, finger traps around suspension fittings and access for inspection. Agree use restrictions rather than assuming an empty seat shows the required space.

For a stand, check the actual floor or ground, stability during entry and movement, and clearance between seat and frame. For outdoor supports, assess weathering, corrosion and the condition of posts or trees; involve an appropriate specialist where needed. Do not assume a pergola, fence post or branch is suitable because it looks substantial.

Agree handover and ongoing inspection

Ask for a written handover identifying the approved arrangement, user restrictions, anchor and connector details, checks completed and unresolved defects. Any acceptance loading should follow a method agreed by the competent assessor, with people clear of the failure area. Do not use someone sitting or bouncing in the seat as proof. Review factory evidence separately using our test report verification guide.

Agree checks before use and a recorded inspection schedule suited to the instructions, usage and environment. Include loose fixings, cracks, distortion, worn connectors, damaged rope, fabric seams and corrosion. Stop use after damage, unexpected movement or deterioration until assessed. Reassess after relocation or changes. Search the OPSS product safety alerts, reports and recalls list for the exact product; absence from the list does not establish safety.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hang a chair from a ceiling joist?

Possibly, after assessment of the joist, its supports and connections, the fixing and movement loads. Finding a joist with a detector does not establish its capacity.

Are the hooks supplied with my hammock safe?

Have the installer identify them and check their documented suitability for the actual substrate, load direction and suspension arrangement. Replace unverified fittings with an assessed, compatible solution.

Can I hang a hammock tightly to stop it sagging?

Do not change the geometry without review. A flatter hammock increases tension at its ends. Agree sag, support spacing, attachment height and floor clearance together.

How often should I inspect a hanging chair?

Agree checks before use and an inspection schedule based on the instructions, usage and environment. Stop use if fixings move, components wear or fabric deteriorates, and have the cause assessed.
