Can I install a greywater system bought from China?
Potentially, but have a local plumber experienced in water reuse assess the wastewater sources, treatment, intended outlets and mains backup before ordering. Settle local approval questions and servicing arrangements against the actual design. Bring the reviewed specification to Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the wastewater your home produces
Ask a plumber experienced in water reuse to survey which bath, shower and basin drains could feed the system. Keep toilet waste outside this brief, and exclude kitchen and laundry flows unless the proposed treatment has been assessed specifically for them. Check whether the existing drainage can be separated without extensive rebuilding.
Request an assessment of household demand, irregular use, storage, odour control and access for cleaning. Have the plumber identify where surplus water, rejected water and treatment residues will go. If the proposal also changes private sewage treatment or discharge, use our domestic sewage system guide.
Agree suitable uses and treatment evidence
Use toilet flushing as the starting brief for assessment. Ask the plumber to record which outlets the design can serve and which remain excluded. Treat garden watering, laundry and spray applications as separate assessment questions. Keep drinking, cooking, bathing and handwashing outside this buying brief.
Request model-specific evidence covering the proposed incoming wastewater, treatment stages and output quality. Ask how filtration, biological treatment and disinfection work together, where applicable. Have a treatment specialist review microbial performance, storage limits and restart after absence. A clear-looking sample is insufficient evidence; use our test report verification guide to check report identity and scope.
Separate the pipes and protect mains water
Specify dedicated recycled-water pipework and clearly labelled outlets. Ask for a drawing tracing every collection drain, treatment stage, tank, pump, toilet feed and mains top-up. Have the installer check existing connections and record how each outlet will be checked for cross-connections at handover.
In England and Wales, backflow protection must suit the highest applicable downstream fluid category before the next protection device. Have the plumber specify the complete mains backup arrangement, including the appropriate air gap where needed. Do not buy a generic check valve as a substitute for that design. Our rainwater installation guide covers the related separation and backup checks.
Resolve local approvals before ordering
The water-fitting rules discussed here apply to England and Wales. Certain work requires notification to the water supplier and consent before it starts, with limited approved-contractor exceptions. Send the actual design to the supplier and ask which route applies. For Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the local supplier and installer to identify the applicable requirements.
Separately, ask local building control and the planning authority what approvals the alterations need. Ask the sewerage provider about changed drainage connections and treatment waste; involve the environmental regulator if a discharge to ground or surface water is proposed. Keep written responses and conditions with the drawings rather than treating the factory's product documents as site approval.
Make maintenance and fault handling practical
Get an English maintenance manual before paying. Agree who cleans strainers and tanks, replaces filters or disinfection components, checks water quality and services pumps and controls. Ask the intended service company to accept the model and confirm access to consumables. Use our spare-parts planning guide for replacement commitments.
Ask for written procedures for power cuts, blocked filters, treatment alarms, prolonged absence and suspected contamination. Have the installer demonstrate how unsuitable water is prevented from reaching reuse outlets and how the household switches to the reviewed backup arrangement. Agree cleaning and sampling intervals with the specialist rather than inventing a schedule from a sales brochure.

Order against the design and verify handover
Attach the reviewed drawings, accepted wastewater sources, intended uses, treatment evidence and maintenance plan to the order. Identify the supplied treatment equipment, controls and protection assemblies, and require approval before substitutions. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can compare the proposed factory supply with this specification.
In England and Wales, water systems must be tested, flushed and, where necessary, disinfected before first use. Agree commissioning records covering outlet identification, cross-connection checks, treatment operation, alarms and mains backup. Obtain the installer's handover and agreed water-quality results before using the recycled supply.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use recycled shower water to flush toilets?
Potentially. Have the plumber assess collection, treatment, storage and toilet feeds, then confirm mains protection and the local approval route for the actual design.
Can I use greywater for drinking or showering?
Keep drinking, cooking, bathing and handwashing outside this domestic reuse brief. Do not extend a toilet-flushing design to those uses without a separate specialist assessment.
Does a greywater system need water company approval?
In England and Wales, certain water-fitting work needs notification and consent. Send the supplier the design before ordering and ask which route applies. Check locally elsewhere in the UK.
What happens when greywater treatment fails?
Agree this before buying. Ask the installer to demonstrate isolation of unsuitable water, alarms, the reviewed backup supply and the cleaning or servicing needed before restarting reuse.
