Can I import an electric food truck from China?

Yes, provided the vehicle meets the applicable approval requirements, is registered with DVLA and has a safe catering installation. A retro body or an electric motor does not establish road legality. Check the finished specification before paying a deposit. Discuss the sourcing brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish the approval route before ordering

For a new electric goods vehicle in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant vehicle approval authority whether GB type approval or an Individual Vehicle Approval route applies. DVSA inspects vehicles under the individual approval scheme. You need proof of vehicle approval before registration, then must register a permanently imported vehicle with DVLA. Our electric vans guide covers the underlying vehicle specification.

Send the exact model, identification details, chassis drawings and proposed kitchen layout to a UK vehicle approval specialist before ordering. Ask which route applies to the completed catering vehicle, what evidence is missing and whether the conversion changes the approval position. This guide focuses on Great Britain vehicle approval; discuss a Northern Ireland purchase separately.

Why a retro electric van may be unsuitable

Low speed and retro styling do not establish that a vehicle meets the approval standards. A vehicle that cannot meet the applicable standards cannot obtain the approval needed for registration. Treat an undocumented claim of road legality as unresolved. Do not accept a CE certificate for kitchen equipment as proof of vehicle approval.

Ask for approval documents matching the exact vehicle specification. Check brakes, steering, lights, glazing, tyres, identification and loaded weight with the approval specialist. Missing technical evidence or unsuitable components can make approval impractical. Inspect the actual chassis and completed body through factory verification, rather than relying on brochure photographs.

Check the kitchen as a separate installation

Electric propulsion does not mean electric cooking. If the kitchen uses gas, HSE says gas work, including inspection and maintenance, should only be carried out by a competent, Gas Safe-registered engineer. Ask for an engineer whose competence covers the proposed mobile catering equipment, and arrange review of the pipework, appliances, cylinder arrangement and ventilation before accepting the conversion.

Electrical equipment and installations must be maintained to prevent danger, so far as reasonably practicable. Have a competent electrician review and test the kitchen installation, including its external supply connection, inverter, protection and isolation. Agree how cooking and refrigeration affect the energy available for driving. Our catering equipment guide covers appliance sourcing and food-contact materials.

Register the food business with the council

The Food Standards Agency guidance published on GOV.UK requires registration with the local authority at least 28 days before trading. This is separate from vehicle registration. For a mobile operation, ask the council which address to register and discuss the menu and layout before commissioning the body. For Scotland, confirm the local process with the council.

Show the council your arrangements for handwashing, drinking water, wastewater, cleaning, refrigeration and food preparation. Ask separately about the proposed trading locations and any permissions they need. Keep vehicle documents, installation records and food business paperwork together; none should be treated as a substitute for the others.

Budget for duty, VAT and approval work

Our electric vans guide records 10% duty for Chinese electric goods vehicles. Use that as background, and ask your customs agent to confirm the classification and current rate for the completed catering vehicle. Budget for standard UK import VAT at 20%, with duty included in the taxable value. The import duty and VAT guide explains the calculation.

Compare complete costs: vehicle, shipping, customs handling, approval evidence, inspections, modifications and kitchen commissioning. Request separate vehicle and kitchen specifications even when the supplier quotes a complete truck. Avoid committing to a factory price until a UK specialist has identified the work needed after arrival.

Compare a UK-converted base vehicle

An alternative is an electric base vehicle already registered in the UK, converted by a UK catering vehicle builder. Ask the builder to explain any approval or registration implications of the conversion. Compare the finished payload, working range, kitchen power supply, installation records, parts support and warranty with the Chinese offer.

If retro styling matters, explore whether the UK builder can achieve it on a suitable base vehicle. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China to check the proposed factory and specification. Bring the vehicle approval specialist into the sourcing process before production; our machinery sourcing service can help organise the equipment brief.

Frequently asked questions

Can I legally drive a Chinese electric food truck in the UK?

Potentially. Establish the applicable vehicle approval route and obtain the evidence needed for DVLA registration. Check the catering installation separately before buying.

Can a low-speed retro electric van get UK registration?

Only if it meets the applicable approval requirements. Low speed and retro styling do not prove eligibility. Have a UK approval specialist assess the exact specification before paying.

Do I need to register my food truck with the council?

Yes. FSA guidance requires food business registration with the local authority at least 28 days before trading. Ask the council which address to use for your mobile operation.

Is buying a UK-converted electric food truck easier?

It can simplify checking the base vehicle and accessing local support. Still ask about conversion approval, installation records, loaded weight, kitchen power and warranty.
