Can I import a mushroom grow kit from China?
Possibly, but confirm the exact species, live spawn and every substrate ingredient before ordering. Ask the destination plant-health authority to assess the complete kit for home use and confirm any documents and delivery conditions. Supplier details can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the fungus and the material being supplied
Ask the supplier for the scientific species name, strain identifier, culture provenance and batch details. Obtain photographs of the label and actual contents. An edible-mushroom description or a photograph of the expected harvest is insufficient to identify the live material being shipped. Ask the supplier to resolve inconsistent names before you proceed.
Establish whether the order contains spores, a liquid culture, grain spawn, inoculated wooden plugs or a colonised growing block. Ask what carries the live culture and whether spawn and substrate are packed separately or already combined. Describe the actual contents in your enquiry rather than relying on the listing’s product category.
Describe every substrate and carrier ingredient
Request the complete composition of the spawn carrier, growing block and any separate casing layer or refill bag. Identify grain, straw, sawdust, wood, bark, compost, soil, peat, coconut fibre and any manure or other animal-derived ingredient. Ask for ingredient origins, wood species where relevant, previous use and treatment records. Clarify whether treatment occurred before or after inoculation.
Our soil and growing-media guide explains the restrictions and authorisation questions for those materials. For a mushroom kit, ask the authority to assess the carrier and substrate together with the live fungus. Do not treat sealed packaging, a soil-free description or a sterilisation claim as an answer about the complete kit.
Send the enquiry to the destination authority
For England or Wales, start with APHA’s plant-health enquiry route. GOV.UK’s animal and plant health help service directs you to the appropriate contact form or team. For Scotland, contact SASA; for Northern Ireland, contact DAERA. Ask the receiving team to redirect any component outside its remit, particularly animal-derived ingredients.
State that the kit comes from China and is intended for home hobby cultivation and personal consumption. Include the destination address, quantity, weight, proposed arrival point, postal or courier route and any onward movement. Explain who buys, imports and receives it if a business is arranging the purchase. The garden plant import guide covers the broader destination and route checks.
Ask for a component-specific written answer
Attach the specification and ask: is this named fungus, in this supplied form, with these carrier and substrate ingredients, permitted for the stated home use? Ask which import treatment applies to each component and the assembled kit. Request the applicable guidance and clarification of any prohibition, authorisation, phytosanitary certification, notification, inspection or entry-point condition.
Ask explicitly whether personal use changes the answer and whether a ready-colonised block is treated differently from separate spawn and substrate. If scientific authorisation is suggested, explain your ordinary home growing arrangements and ask whether that use is eligible. Keep questions open until the response covers the complete specification. Use our import licence guide for the general permission-checking method.

Make the confirmed specification an ordering checkpoint
Before paying, compare the written advice with the supplier’s final species, culture form, ingredients and shipping route. Agree that substitutions need your approval and renewed checks. If documents or permissions are required, identify who obtains them and have the carrier confirm how the parcel will follow the advised route. An authority’s advice does not replace any required issued document.
If the supplier cannot identify the culture or disclose the substrate, leave the order unapproved. Consider a UK-supplied kit instead; importing spawn alone would need its own assessment. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can gather labels, ingredient declarations and treatment records, and compare the proposed shipment with the specification you submitted.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a mushroom grow kit for personal use?
Possibly. Send the destination authority the species, culture form, complete substrate composition and route. Ask for an answer covering home cultivation before ordering.
What details do I need for mushroom spawn?
Ask for the scientific species name, strain, culture provenance, batch and supplied form. Identify the grain, liquid, wood or other material carrying the culture, with photographs and labels.
Does a sterilised mushroom block avoid import checks?
Do not assume so. Provide the ingredients and treatment records, including whether treatment preceded inoculation, and ask the authority to assess the complete live kit.
Who should I ask about importing a mushroom kit?
Start with APHA for England or Wales, SASA for Scotland or DAERA for Northern Ireland. Ask for assessment of both the live fungus and its carrier and substrate, with referrals where needed.
