Getting started

Can I install a garden zip wire from China?

Yes, if the exact kit suits your garden and intended riders, and a competent specialist assesses the supports, anchors, clearances and braking. Follow model-specific instructions and keep it out of use until installation checks pass. Factory documents can be gathered by the China-based staff of Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the kit suits family garden use

Before ordering, obtain the exact model, intended setting, rider age range, weight limits, supervision arrangements and complete parts list. Ask a product safety specialist to review the product category and evidence for the intended UK destination. For business purchases intended for resale, use our toy safety guide for the wider importer checks.

Ask whether the supplied trolley, seat, suspension, cable and brake were assessed together. Hold the purchase if documents describe a different combination or leave rider limits unclear. Our garden play equipment guide covers general anchoring, fall protection and replacement parts; the checks below address the zip wire installation.

Have the supports and anchors assessed

Arrange an on-site assessment by a specialist experienced in zip wire installations. For tree anchors, involve an arboricultural specialist; for posts, foundations or building attachments, involve a competent structural professional. Ask them to assess cable tension and forces during travel and braking, using the manufacturer's installation data. A tree's appearance or a post's thickness does not establish suitability.

Obtain a written arrangement covering approved supports, anchor positions, fittings, tree protection where relevant, foundations and inspection access. Do not use fences, sheds or improvised fixings without that assessment. Ask who checks underground services before excavation and how tree growth, ground movement or support deterioration will trigger reassessment.

Check the whole travel and stopping area

Have the installer map the rider's movement through launch, travel, braking, rebound and dismounting. Include cable sag under load, sideways movement and the rider's body below the seat. Check clearance from supports, branches, fences, walls, paths and other play equipment. Obtain the required fall surface and its extent rather than assuming lawn is suitable.

Choose a route away from overhead power lines. HSE warns that approaching a live line can cause injury without touching it. If lines are near the proposed installation, stop planning that route and obtain advice from their owner. Keep spectators and other children outside the travel and stopping area, and plan how a stranded rider can be assisted safely.

Match braking to the permitted riders

Ask how the brake controls arrival speed, where it engages, how much stopping travel it needs and how rebound is controlled. Have the specialist check compatibility with the trolley, cable slope and permitted rider weight range, including lighter riders. A spring or bumper in the carton does not establish that the complete installation will stop safely.

Do not improvise braking by grabbing the cable, dragging feet or having an adult catch the rider. Follow the specified riding position, age and weight limits, launch method and supervision instructions. Prevent tandem riding unless the exact model expressly permits it. Adults should not test a children's kit unless they fall within its permitted rider limits.

Install to instructions and record acceptance

Obtain English instructions matching the supplied components before committing. They should explain cable slope, sag or tension, termination details, clamp orientation, tightening requirements, brake placement and final checks. GOV.UK advises reading and following product instructions. Use our assembly instructions guide for the factory trial, then resolve any ambiguity before site work.

Have the installer record the fitted components, settings, support assessment and commissioning results. Use the manufacturer's prescribed test procedure under the specialist's control, without using children as test loads. Keep the equipment unavailable until faults are corrected and acceptance is recorded. Ask your insurer about the proposed installation using our home insurance guide.

Check before each use and after changes

Before each use, inspect accessible anchors and supports for movement, cracks or decay; cable for broken strands, kinks or corrosion; and terminations for slippage or loose fittings. Check the trolley, seat, suspension, connectors and brake for wear, damage and correct engagement. Confirm that the route, fall surface and stopping area are clear, then perform the instructed functional check.

Stop use if anything has shifted, braking changes, damage appears or a check cannot be completed. Block access while arranging assessment and repair. Follow the maintenance and weather restrictions, and arrange reassessment after storms, impacts, support changes or replacement of safety components. Keep inspection records; routine visual checks do not replace the specialist's scheduled examinations.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attach a garden zip wire to my trees?

Only after an arboricultural specialist and zip wire installer assess the trees, attachment method and installation forces. A healthy-looking trunk does not establish a suitable anchor.

How much clearance does a garden zip wire need?

Use the exact model's layout and a site assessment covering loaded sag, rider movement, braking, rebound and dismounting. Do not choose clearance from cable length alone.

Is a spring brake enough for a garden zip wire?

Have the complete braking arrangement checked against the trolley, slope and permitted rider weights. Confirm stopping travel and rebound control before allowing family use.

What should I check before using a garden zip wire?

Check supports, anchors, cable, terminations, trolley, seat, connectors and brake, plus the clear route and stopping area. Follow the instructed functional check and stop use if anything is doubtful.
