Getting started

Can I buy a garden bridge from China for a stream?

Yes, but treat it as a site-specific crossing project. Before manufacture, identify the watercourse authority, resolve environmental and planning permissions, and have an engineer approve the bridge design and foundations together. Coordinate the approved factory brief with Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the watercourse authority before choosing a bridge

The permission route below covers England. For a site elsewhere in the UK, ask the relevant local authority to identify the route before ordering. Prepare a location plan, photographs, bank levels, proposed crossing position and intended use. Check land ownership and installation access rather than assuming the garden boundary settles everything.

Check the main river map and confirm the classification with the authority. For a main river, ask the Environment Agency whether a permit or notification is needed. For an ordinary watercourse, contact the local council or internal drainage board about land drainage consent. Send the proposed foundations and installation method as well as the finished bridge drawing.

Resolve planning and environmental questions

Contact the local planning authority to establish whether planning permission is needed. Ask the watercourse authority separately about the crossing and associated works. Request written responses tied to the proposed drawings. Describe excavation, temporary supports, bank alterations and lifting access; a photograph of the finished bridge leaves these questions unanswered.

You are responsible for finding out whether the project is likely to affect a protected area or site, and must not harm protected species or their habitats. Ask an ecologist what surveys and permissions to investigate. Build agreed environmental restrictions into the design and installation brief before releasing manufacture.

Commission a structural design for the actual site

Appoint a structural engineer experienced in comparable crossings to prepare or review the design. Define who will use it, whether equipment will cross, and how access will be controlled. Ask the engineer to address loading, deflection, vibration, barriers, slip resistance, durability and inspection access. A decorative garden bridge catalogue does not establish suitability for your stream.

Give the engineer the site survey and ask how flood levels, debris and bank erosion affect the proposed crossing. Request calculations and drawings identifying materials, connections, bearings and support reactions. Put the accepted requirements into a factory specification, with clear responsibility for reviewing the manufacturer's detailed drawings.

Approve foundations before fixing the factory dimensions

Have the engineer assess the ground information and design the abutments, foundations and anchorage alongside the bridge. Ask how the design addresses settlement, sliding, uplift and scour around the supports. Avoid accepting a generic concrete base sketch without checking the actual banks and ground conditions.

Before manufacture, obtain the engineer's written approval of the coordinated bridge and foundation drawings. Check bearing positions, support levels, anchor locations, installation tolerances and drainage. Confirm that these drawings match the permission documents. Approval here means a recorded engineering decision; keep the authority's permission correspondence separately.

Release manufacture against the approved package

Make production release conditional on resolved permissions, accepted structural calculations and approved foundation interfaces. Agree inspection evidence for materials, welds or other joints, protective finishes and trial assembly. Use the factory audit guide to assess manufacturing capability alongside the engineering review.

Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate the factory brief and production checks through its staff in China. Name the engineer responsible for technical acceptance and the buyer authorised to release manufacture. If the factory proposes different sections, connections or anchor positions, use the design change process before affected work continues.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need permission for a bridge over my own stream?

Check with the watercourse authority and local planning authority using drawings of the crossing, foundations and installation works. Establish the permission route before committing to manufacture.

Who do I contact about an ordinary watercourse?

In England, contact your local council or internal drainage board to check whether land drainage consent is needed. Provide the location and proposed works.

Can I use the Chinese factory's bridge calculations?

Ask your appointed engineer to review them against the site, intended use and foundation design. Record acceptance of the actual drawings and calculations before releasing manufacture.

Should I order the bridge before designing the foundations?

As a purchasing safeguard, approve the foundation design and bridge interfaces first. Changes to bearings, anchors or support levels can otherwise leave a manufactured bridge that does not fit.
