Home insurance for expensive China imports
Before ordering, send your insurer the item specification, replacement-cost evidence and installation plan. Ask which policy covers it, whether it needs specifying, what limits and conditions apply, and when cover starts. Obtain written confirmation. Cambridge China Bridge can help gather factory documents through its staff in China.

Identify the item, owner and intended use
Send the insurer photographs, the specification, proposed location and details of any fixed connections. Ask whether it would be insured as contents or part of the building. Explain who owns it and whether it is for private household use, a rental property, a home business or customer demonstration. If your company buys it, ask whether the home policy can cover company-owned property.
Ask exactly when home cover begins: delivery, unpacking, installation or commissioning. Check temporary storage and damage while moving it into position. Coordinate this answer with the end of transit cover using our cargo insurance guide, so responsibility at delivery is clear.
Agree the valuation evidence before buying
Ask whether settlement would use replacement cost, current value or an expressly agreed value. Send the factory quotation and a separate estimate for replacing the item at your property. Ask whether freight, import charges, delivery, removal and reinstallation belong in that estimate. Confirm the currency and how the insurer wants foreign-currency costs converted.
Ask whether a Chinese invoice is acceptable and whether it needs a translation, payment evidence or an independent valuation. Confirm who may provide that valuation and when it needs updating. Keep the model, serial number, materials, dimensions and photographs together. For bespoke goods, ask how settlement would work if the original factory stopped making the item.
Check specified-item and overall limits
Ask which single-item limit applies to this particular product and whether it must be individually listed on the policy. Ask how a matching set or collection is treated. Check any combined valuables limit and the overall contents sum insured, rather than assuming that listing the item resolves every limit.
Request the proposed specified-item description, insured amount and excess in writing. Ask whether specifying it changes accidental damage or cover away from home, and whether security or storage conditions apply. Confirm whether an understated overall contents value could reduce a claim, even when the imported item is individually listed.
Confirm installation conditions before work starts
Send the installation method, installer details and planned electrical, plumbing or structural alterations. Ask what qualifications, registration, testing, certificates and maintenance records the insurer expects. Ask the installer which approval route applies at the property. For work covered by a competent person scheme, GOV.UK explains that a registered installer can self-certify compliance with building standards. Obtain the insurer's separate answer about cover.
Ask about damage during installation, testing and first use, and whether ongoing cover depends on completing particular checks. For electrical products, use our electrical imports guide for the product requirements. Ask the insurer separately about damage to the equipment and resulting fire or water damage to the home, including scenarios involving faulty equipment or workmanship.

Obtain confirmation that matches the actual purchase
Write: “Please confirm cover for the attached item at the stated address and use, including its classification, accepted valuation, applicable limits, excess, start date, installation conditions and exclusions. Please identify any policy changes needed and send the revised schedule and wording.” Ask for answers to each unresolved question before committing to the order or work.
Check that the written response matches the final model, owner, value and installation plan. Ask the insurer to resolve any conflict with the policy documents; keep the response and revised documents together. Ask how breakdown and manufacturing defects are treated rather than assuming they are insured. Use our faulty goods guide for the separate supplier claim. For dispute costs, see our guide to home legal expenses cover.
