Can home legal cover help with a China purchase?
Possibly, but ask your insurer to confirm cover for the actual buyer, purchase and dispute. Check consumer-contract cover, business exclusions, territorial limits and notification terms. Get written approval before a solicitor incurs costs you expect the policy to fund. Organise your sourcing records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the legal-expenses section of your policy
Find your policy schedule, full legal-expenses wording and any endorsements. Check whether you selected the cover and identify the organisation handling claims. GOV.UK’s guidance on accident compensation notes that policies normally cover only some types of legal problem and have other conditions. That guidance does not establish cover for a purchase dispute.
Ask separately whether the policy offers telephone advice and whether it will fund work on this dispute. Request a written coverage decision referring to the relevant clauses. Keep advice received, claim acknowledgement and funding approval as separate records.
Check consumer-contract cover against the actual purchase
Look for consumer-contract disputes in the wording. Ask how the policy defines an insured person, a covered purchase and business activity. Explain whether the goods were bought for personal use, resale or use in your business, whose name appears on the order and who paid. Do not assume that using a personal account makes a business order eligible.
If your company bought the goods, ask explicitly whether your household policy covers that company and transaction. Check any business exclusions and ask about your business legal-expenses policy separately. Identify the contracting seller using our seller or agent guide, rather than describing every party as the Chinese supplier.
Ask how territorial exclusions apply
Send the insurer the seller’s contracting name and location, your location, delivery destination and any governing-law or dispute-forum clauses. Ask which territorial restrictions apply to the seller, transaction, dispute and proposed proceedings. Request confirmation for your actual facts rather than relying on a heading such as worldwide cover.
Distinguish buying directly from a factory in China from buying through a UK seller whose goods ship from China. Ask whether the policy treats these arrangements differently. Have the solicitor check the applicable jurisdiction as described in our solicitor instruction guide; keep the insurer’s funding decision separate from that assessment.
Notify the insurer and confirm the relevant dates
Contact the claims handler promptly through the route specified in the policy. Ask what notification deadline applies, what documents are required and which date it treats as the start of the dispute. Provide the policy history, order date, delivery date, date you discovered the problem and complaint correspondence. Ask about waiting periods and exclusions for problems known before cover began.
Keep proof of notification and ask for a claim reference and acknowledgement. Use our claim preparation guide to assemble the supporting records. Flag any urgent seller or court correspondence to both the claims handler and solicitor, and ask who will check and manage deadlines while the coverage decision is pending.

Get written approval before authorising legal costs
Before instructing a solicitor to start chargeable work, ask the insurer to approve the firm, scope, rates and expenses in writing. Ask about its panel arrangements and the process for proposing your own solicitor. Confirm the funding limit, any amount you must pay, treatment of costs already incurred and whether further approval is needed for experts, proceedings or settlement.
Ask how the insurer assesses prospects of success and proportionality, and what evidence it needs. If it declines cover, request the reasons, policy clauses and complaint procedure in writing. Decide separately whether to fund a limited assessment yourself. For subsequent action against a UK seller, use our dispute escalation guide. For personal purchase disputes, see our guide to help with court fees.
