Erase customer data before reselling smart devices
Before resale, verify local data erasure and removal of the previous owner’s access. Handle cloud deletion separately, including backups where a valid erasure request applies. A reset screen alone is insufficient evidence. Agree factory tests and return procedures with Cambridge China Bridge.

Specify separate deletion and reset outcomes
Make local erasure, cloud deletion and account unlinking separate acceptance checks. Ask the factory and app operator to describe what each control actually does. Removing a device from an account, deleting an account and restoring factory settings should each have a documented scope.
ICO guidance says an erasure setting must clearly explain whether it deletes the account, personal information including backups, or both. Uninstalling the app does not necessarily delete personal information. Keep product security paperwork separate through our connectable products guide.
Prove that local customer data is erased
Use a test account and dummy recordings, network credentials, messages and usage history. Run the documented reset on the intended firmware, then inspect normal menus, storage and accessible diagnostic tools. Include removable memory and any storage that the reset does not cover. Ask how the erasure method prevents recovery; an empty screen proves only what the screen displays.
Ask the factory to demonstrate interrupted resets, offline returns and devices that cannot start normally. Define a separate recovery or storage disposal route for failures. Quarantine units whose erasure cannot be verified. Tie the test procedure to the approved release using our firmware and software approval guide.
Handle cloud copies and backups separately
The right to erasure is not absolute. Where a valid request applies and no exemption applies, ICO guidance requires steps to erase data from live systems and backups. Backup data awaiting scheduled replacement must be put beyond use and not used for another purpose. Explain the backup outcome clearly to the customer.
Ask the service operator to map recordings, account profiles, support exports and shared copies, then identify who handles deletion in each system. Where disclosed data is subject to an applicable erasure request, recipients must be informed unless this is impossible or involves disproportionate effort. Ask for completion evidence and a procedure preventing restored backups from reintroducing deleted data.
Test account unlinking in both directions
After reset and unlinking, try the former test account again. Check that it cannot view recordings, locate the device, receive alerts or send commands. Check shared household access, linked services and active sessions as well as the main account. Unlinking should remove access without silently deleting unrelated devices from the customer’s account.
Register the returned unit to a fresh test account and check that no previous content or ownership lock appears. Repeat the checks after reconnecting it to the internet. Arrange an ownership verification route for returns where the customer cannot unlink the unit, without asking warehouse staff to use the customer’s password.

Make evidence the resale release gate
Keep each returned unit quarantined until its local erasure and access checks pass. Record its serial identifier, firmware, procedure used, operator, outcome and unresolved issues. Track cloud erasure requests separately, including any outstanding backup handling. Keep customer content out of the inspection record; use dummy data when demonstrating the process.
Agree who owns each step across the factory, app operator, service provider and returns warehouse before placing an order. Ask Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China to obtain the factory’s procedure and witness agreed sample tests. For camera-specific sourcing checks, use our security camera guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is a factory reset enough before resale?
Treat it as a step to verify. Check local storage, former account access and fresh account registration. Handle cloud deletion separately rather than assuming the reset covers it.
Does deleting the app delete customer data?
Not necessarily. ICO guidance says app removal does not necessarily delete personal information. Check the account deletion and erasure controls separately.
Must customer data be deleted from backups?
Where a valid erasure request applies without an exemption, take steps covering backups too. Data awaiting scheduled replacement must be beyond use, with the outcome explained to the customer.
What if a returned device is still account locked?
Quarantine it. Use the agreed ownership verification and unlinking route, then confirm the old account loses access and a fresh account can register the unit before releasing it.
