How to test imported products for durability

Define the intended service life, use conditions and acceptable deterioration before ordering. Test production-representative samples against a written plan, then review failures, measurements and sample identity. Appearance inspection alone cannot establish durability. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate the factory evidence.

Define what lasting means

Write a service-life brief covering the user, intended working life, frequency of use, loads, environment and maintenance. Describe what must still work at the end: a hinge must remain secure, a seal must prevent leakage, or a fabric must retain usable strength. Separate acceptable cosmetic ageing from loss of function and unsafe deterioration.

An appearance check can find visible shipment defects but cannot establish how the product will behave after repeated use. Use our inspection guide for shipment acceptance; add a separate durability plan for wear, fatigue, corrosion and ageing.

Reproduce the buyer's actual use

Include installation, repeated operation, storage and cleaning. Specify realistic loads, operating and rest periods, temperature changes, moisture, sunlight and cleaning agents where relevant. Consider combinations: a loaded joint exposed to moisture may behave differently from an unloaded joint tested dry. Include foreseeable rough handling without turning the test into an arbitrary destruction exercise.

State the maintenance allowed during testing. A product that passes only with frequent adjustments may be unsuitable for customers who cannot make them. HSE guidance says the scope of work-equipment inspection depends on the equipment, its use and exposure conditions. Apply that same practical attention to conditions when briefing durability tests.

Agree a test plan before production

Ask a laboratory or suitably experienced engineer to select relevant methods and explain what each demonstrates. Put the product revision, sample selection, sample quantity rationale, conditioning, equipment, loading sequence, duration, measurement intervals and pass criteria in writing. Set stop conditions for unsafe behaviour and record permitted interruptions. Keep safety compliance assessment separate from the commercial service-life question.

Use measurable limits rather than 'still looks good'. Agree allowable looseness, leakage, strength loss or performance decline, as appropriate. If testing is accelerated, ask how the stresses relate to actual use and what supports the claimed equivalence. Without a justified relationship, describe the result as performance under the test conditions, not proof of a calendar lifespan.

Test samples that represent the order

Use samples made with the intended production materials, components, tooling and assembly process. Include relevant variants and likely weak configurations, such as heavily loaded joints or vulnerable finishes. Agree sample selection with the laboratory rather than letting the factory provide only specially prepared pieces. Record batch identity and retain an untested comparison sample.

Connect each result to the actual sample tested. Photographs, seals, dispatch records and laboratory receipt details help establish that connection; see laboratory sample chain of custody. A report for a similar-looking model is not durability evidence for your order. Use test report verification to check report identity and scope.

Use results to control production and claims

Request individual sample results, measurements before and after testing, failure timing, photographs and deviations from the plan. Record failures as well as passes. Decide whether the evidence supports the intended use, needs further testing or requires redesign. After a failure, identify the cause and test the corrected production configuration against the agreed criteria.

Carry the tested material and assembly details into the order specification. Agree which changes trigger review or retesting, and check subsequent batches for those details. Track field failures against batch identity and actual use to refine the plan. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate sample selection and factory follow-up; specialist test results should remain identifiable to the laboratory that produced them.

Frequently asked questions

Does a pre-shipment inspection prove durability?

An appearance check does not. Durability needs a separate plan covering repeated use, environmental exposure and acceptable deterioration, using samples that represent production.

How many samples should I durability test?

Ask the laboratory to justify the quantity against product variation, failure consequences and the confidence you need. Include relevant variants and agree how samples are selected.

Can accelerated testing prove years of use?

Only a justified relationship between the test stresses and actual use can support that inference. Ask for the assumptions and limitations; otherwise report only what the test demonstrated.

Can I use the factory's existing durability report?

Check whether it covers your exact materials, components, assembly and intended use. Verify sample identity and methods. Changes or gaps may require additional testing.
