Getting started

How to demonstrate an intermittent product fault

Keep an original recording that identifies the item and shows the safe setup, actions and failure. Match it to operating conditions and error logs, then send a written procedure with the expected result and stop conditions. Ask the seller to record any differences in its test. Decide whether recording is safe

This guide concerns an item bought from China for personal use. It adds recording and reproduction instructions to our business guide on no fault found returns. Describe what you observed, such as an unexpected shutdown, rather than guessing which component caused it.

Do not recreate smoke, overheating, electric shock or uncontrolled movement for a video. Use existing evidence and seek competent assessment. HSE’s workplace electrical safety guidance advises stopping use immediately when equipment appears faulty and having it checked by a competent person. Do not open powered equipment or bypass protective devices to obtain proof.

Make the recording understandable

Where operation is safe, position the camera so recording does not interfere with handling the item. Show its identifying label, connected accessories, settings and relevant controls. Keep the action and result visible in a continuous recording, with sound where the symptom is audible. Explain what should happen before showing what actually happens.

Keep the original file unchanged. Send a labelled viewing copy and identify where the symptom appears. Disclose any cuts or obscured details in that copy. Avoid capturing people, addresses, passwords or account screens unnecessarily. If the fault occurs before recording starts, say so; do not stage a substitute event.

Connect conditions and logs to the incident

Keep an incident diary beside the recording. Note the date, time and time zone, whether the item was cold or already running, elapsed use, load, settings, accessories and software version. Describe the surroundings and power or network connection where relevant. Distinguish measured conditions from estimates, and include successful use under comparable conditions.

Photograph the exact error message and export available logs through the normal user interface before resetting or updating. Note whether the device clock differs from your recording clock. Link the log entries to the incident using that difference. Preserve the raw export; explain codes separately without guessing their meaning. If logs are unavailable, record that limitation. Before arranging repair, see repairing before the seller resolves the fault.

Write a procedure another person can follow

Use the fields below to turn your account into a test instruction. Describe actions in their actual order and include any wait or warm-up that preceded the failure. Copy relevant operating limits from the instructions. Do not invent a test duration or demand repeated operation where safety is uncertain.

Ask the seller to confirm that it can use the same setup safely. Have it record departures, including different accessories, software, load or starting state. Request the observed result and supporting files, including successful runs. A result obtained under different conditions may leave your reported trigger untested.

Send a pack and brief an assessor

Send a short cover note identifying the purchase, symptom, requested response and attached files. Include the procedure, incident diary, original recordings and log exports through an agreed transfer method. Ask the seller to confirm receipt and explain what it tested. Keep its response with your evidence so differences can be compared.

If the disagreement continues, choose an independent assessor with experience of the product and symptom. Agree the scope, cost, access to accessories and permission for any dismantling before handing it over. Ask the report to distinguish observed failures, possible causes and unresolved limitations. For transfers, follow sample chain of custody. A recording documents behaviour; it may not establish the underlying cause.

Frequently asked questions

How do I film a fault that only happens sometimes?

Record only when operation is safe. Show the item, setup, controls and result continuously where possible. Keep the original and an incident diary. Use existing evidence for dangerous symptoms.

What if the seller says it works?

Ask for its setup, action sequence and observed results. Compare these with your written procedure, including starting state, accessories and elapsed use. Identify which reported conditions remain untested.

Should I reset the product before sending it back?

Preserve available logs, settings and recordings first. Ask the seller what it needs and record any agreed reset or update, when it happened and how behaviour changed.

What should an independent assessor check?

Ask it to examine the identified item against your symptom and procedure, record actual conditions and explain findings and limitations. Agree any dismantling or destructive testing beforehand.
