Collect personal air freight from a UK airport
Arrange collection with the named cargo handler before travelling. Confirm that your goods are available, customs release and collection authority are accepted, charges are settled and your identification and vehicle meet the terminal's conditions. Cambridge China Bridge can help coordinate China-side packing and shipment documents.

Find the handler holding your shipment
Ask the airline or forwarder for the arrival notice, handling agent's name, cargo collection address and import-desk contact. Confirm these directly with the handler using your air waybill reference and consignee name. Use the confirmed cargo address rather than navigating to the passenger terminal. Ask whether the shipment has been transferred to another warehouse.
If the forwarder issued a house air waybill, send that reference alongside the master air waybill and ask which reference identifies your packages in the handler's records. Confirm that the goods are physically available for collection, rather than relying on flight arrival. See how to read an air waybill for the document fields.
Separate customs release from permission to collect
Before arrival, send your chosen customs broker the invoice, packing list and air waybill. Explain that this is a personal purchase and describe the goods and intended use accurately. Ask the broker to confirm the declaration arrangements, identification details and any goods-specific documents needed. Use the customs document guide for the underlying paperwork, with the broker confirming what applies to your personal shipment.
HMRC requires a temporary-storage facility to have evidence of customs-authorised release before allowing removal. Ask the broker for release confirmation and the handler to confirm acceptance against your shipment. Separately, obtain the airline or forwarder's collection authority and resolve commercial holds. Ask which release note, collection code or electronic authority the desk accepts. For tax questions, see personal-purchase import tax.
Confirm identification and collection authority
Ask the handler whether it accepts collection by a private individual and which original identification to bring. Specifically ask whether a passport or driving licence is accepted, whether proof of address is needed and how the name must match the consignee record. Get discrepancies resolved before travelling. Confirm booking arrangements, collection hours, vehicle registration details and any visitor or protective-clothing instructions.
If a friend or haulier collects, ask for the handler's authorisation format and how to submit it. Confirm the collector's name, identification, vehicle details and booking reference with the desk. Give the collector the accepted release documents and a contact who can resolve a hold. Ask whether documents must be printed or can be shown electronically.
Get handling and storage charges in writing
Request an itemised collection quote showing terminal handling, document or release fees, customs clearance, storage, loading and any other applicable service. Ask which charges are already covered by the freight booking, who invoices each remaining charge and whether VAT is included. Confirm payment methods and when payment will show as cleared at the collection desk.
Ask when any free storage ends, the exact event that starts charging, the charging basis and whether weekends or holidays count. Request the total for your planned collection date and the next charging point if collection slips. Ask whether charges continue during a customs hold. Keep the written quotation with your arrival notice. See storage and freight delay charges for wider checks.

Choose transport the terminal can load
Get the handler's recorded package count, packed dimensions, gross weight and packaging type, including any pallet or crate added in transit. Ask whether it will load a private car or hired van, which loading equipment it uses and whether it permits repacking. Match the vehicle's payload, door opening and load space to the packed goods. For bulky cargo, ask a haulier to quote collection and home delivery with suitable unloading equipment.
Confirm unloading space and help at home before dispatching the vehicle. Carry the booking, shipment references, accepted authority, identification and payment confirmation. At handover, compare package marks and count, photograph visible damage and record discrepancies on the collection receipt before leaving. Keep the receipt and release records. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can check packed dimensions and photographs before shipment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I collect my China air freight myself?
Ask the named cargo handler whether it accepts private collection. Confirm cargo availability, accepted customs release and collection authority, payment, identification and a vehicle it can load before travelling.
What ID do I need to collect airport cargo?
Ask the handler which original photo identification it accepts and whether proof of address is needed. Confirm name matching and any authorisation needed if someone collects for you.
Does customs clearance mean my cargo is ready?

How much are airport handling and storage charges?
Get an itemised quote from the actual handler for your shipment and collection date. Confirm included charges, VAT, free-storage expiry, charging basis and payment arrangements before booking transport.
