How to use Chinese shopping apps privately

Download through the platform's genuine website or a verified app store listing, allow only permissions needed for your task, and decline optional tracking. Avoid saving payment details and request account and data deletion separately from uninstalling. For buying without your own platform account, speak to Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the download before signing in

Start from the platform's genuine website and follow its app download link, or check the developer name and linked website in your device's app store. Compare these with the platform's own information. Do not rely on the logo, reviews or a sponsored search result alone. Avoid installation files sent by sellers or strangers, and stop if installation asks you to disable device security.

Read the privacy notice before registering: look for what information is collected, who receives it, where it is processed and how to contact support. Keep the app and device software updated. App authenticity does not establish seller reliability; use our platform buying guide for supplier and payment checks.

Grant permissions for a specific task

Start with contacts, microphone, location and photo-library access denied. If a task needs access, choose the narrowest option available: selected photos for an upload, camera access while scanning, or location only while using the app. Try entering a delivery address manually before granting location access. Review permissions again after using the feature.

Keep a work login separate from personal social accounts, and use a unique password. Do not upload customer address books or confidential buying documents just to browse. The UK government's app security code is voluntary; use it as a checklist, rather than proof that a particular app has been assessed or approved.

Decline optional tracking and extra information

Look in both device settings and the app's privacy settings for optional tracking, personalised advertising, analytics and marketing choices. Turn off unwanted options where available, then check that browsing and ordering still work. Treat advertising personalisation, notifications and device permissions as separate controls. Turning off personalised adverts does not establish that all data collection has stopped.

Provide accurate information needed for the transaction, but leave optional profile fields blank. If identity verification appears, ask official support which documents your account needs and how to submit them securely. Do not send identity documents or login codes to a seller in chat. Our guide to buying without a platform account explains an alternative when registration or verification becomes a barrier.

Avoid unnecessary saved payment details

Before paying, look for a save-card checkbox, linked wallet or automatic-payment setting. Decline saving where possible. If details are already stored, check both the shopping account and any separate payment service for removal controls. Check subscriptions and payment authorisations separately; removing a saved card should not be treated as cancelling every arrangement.

Keep receipts and order references in your business records, without storing full card details or security codes. Never send card photographs, passwords or payment approval codes through seller chat. If you suspect misuse, contact your card issuer or payment provider through its genuine app or your existing contact details. For a child's orders, see our guide to child purchases using a saved card.

Request account closure and data deletion

Before closing the account, download invoices, order records and dispute evidence, and resolve pending deliveries or refunds. Look for account closure and personal-data deletion separately. Uninstalling removes the app from your device; do not treat it as confirmation that the provider has closed your account or deleted its records. Check any linked payment account separately.

Use the app's privacy contact or official support channel. Write: ‘Please close my account and delete the personal data associated with it. Please confirm completion, or explain what you will retain, why and for how long.’ Keep the request and response. If support requests identity evidence, verify the channel and ask what minimum information is needed. Do not assume submission means deletion is complete.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a Chinese shopping app is genuine?

Follow the download link from the platform's genuine website and compare the store developer and website details. Avoid seller-sent installation files and requests to disable device security.

Does a shopping app need my contacts or location?

Deny access initially and test the feature you need. Try entering the delivery address manually. If access is needed, choose the narrowest available permission and revoke it afterwards.

Can I pay without saving my card?

Look for a save-card option and decline it where available. Check the shopping app and any linked payment service separately for stored details and automatic-payment authorisations.

Does uninstalling the app delete my account?

Do not assume so. Save your order records, request account closure and personal-data deletion through official support, and keep the confirmation or explanation of retained records.
