Can I fit a roof box from China to my UK car?
A China-made roof box or rack can be suitable, but confirm the exact car, roof type and mounting kit before ordering. Check the driving roof-load allowance including the bars and box, obtain fitting instructions, and plan loaded clearance. Arrange factory checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Get written confirmation for the exact mounting kit
Give the supplier and your installer the vehicle identification details, model year, body style and roof configuration. Distinguish raised rails, flush rails, fixed mounting points and a bare roof. Check the vehicle handbook for roof-carrier restrictions, including panoramic roofs. Request the rack manufacturer's fitment document naming your variant, feet, adapters and mounting-kit references. Hold the order if compatibility remains unresolved.
Ask who issued any claimed mounting approval and what combination it covers. Confirm the document with its issuer; a seller's model list or photograph is insufficient for your purchase decision. Treat manufacturer fitment confirmation and any statutory vehicle-approval assessment as separate questions. For drilling, structural changes and insurer checks, use our vehicle modification guide.
Calculate the luggage allowance before choosing a box
Obtain the vehicle's roof-load limit for driving from its handbook or manufacturer, plus the limits for the bars, feet, mounting kit and box. Government guidance says not to exceed the manufacturer's recommended roof-rack weight limit. Ask what each rating includes: a box's luggage capacity and a vehicle's total roof-load allowance may describe different loads.
Deduct the weight of the bars, feet, adapters and empty box from the vehicle's driving roof-load allowance. Compare the remaining luggage allowance with the rack and box limits, accounting for what each limit includes. Use the most restrictive resulting allowance. Ask the installer to check overall vehicle and axle loading too. Do not substitute a parked-load rating for a driving limit.
Review attachment instructions before paying
Request readable English instructions for the exact kit and box revision. Have the installer review mounting positions, bar spacing, clamp compatibility, tightening torque, tightening sequence, protective pads and inspection intervals. Check whether the box clamps clear the roof and whether any sunroof restrictions apply. Resolve missing instructions before paying; do not improvise a torque setting or replace a specified fixing.
The Highway Code requires the load to be secured and prohibits dangerous projection. Specify how the box attaches to the bars and how luggage is restrained inside it. Ask for operating restrictions and checks after fitting or reloading. For supporting strength or retention reports, use our test-report verification guide and match the tested assembly to the proposed kit.
Check installed height and moving clearances
Before ordering, request an installed drawing showing the mounting stack, box position and highest point. Compare the proposed overall height with your garage, parking barriers, ferry arrangements and intended route. Include any luggage projecting above an open rack. Allow for measurement uncertainty and sloping entrances; do not rely on the box's standalone height.
Plan to measure the fitted vehicle from the ground to its highest point with the intended load, and keep that height visible to the driver. Check clearances across the loading conditions you expect to use. Have the installer check tailgate opening, aerials, box-lid movement, clamp clearance and any permitted sunroof movement. If an entrance's clearance is uncertain, choose another route.

Make fitment evidence part of the order
Use our product specification guide to record the agreed vehicle application, component references, dimensions, weights, ratings, instructions and evidence. Require written agreement before substitutions. Where practical, arrange a sample fit on the exact vehicle configuration before committing to production. Agree acceptance checks and responsibility for goods that fail them.
Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can check the supplied kit, component markings, fixings, instructions and factory records against that brief. Arrange the vehicle assessment and final fitting checks separately with your UK installer. Keep photographs and an installation record, and recheck attachments as the instructions specify before putting the system into regular use.
Frequently asked questions
Will a universal roof rack fit my car?
Treat universal as a claim to check. Obtain written fitment confirmation for your exact vehicle variant, roof type, feet and mounting kit, then have the installer review it.
Does my roof-load limit include the box and bars?
Confirm the definition in your vehicle handbook. Budget for the bars, feet, adapters, empty box and luggage, then check each component's limit separately.
Does a test certificate prove a roof rack fits?
Check the report's tested assembly and scope. Obtain separate fitment evidence naming your vehicle and mounting kit; a strength test alone does not establish that match.
How do I check roof-box height before ordering?
Request the proposed installed height and compare it with your route and entrances. After fitting, measure the vehicle's actual highest point and check tailgate, lid and roof clearances.
