Can I buy UK car number plates from China?
For road use, arrange replacement plates through a DVLA-registered supplier. Before paying for a China-made order, verify who supplies the finished plates, how original documents are checked and whether the plates meet the required standard and markings. Discuss factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish who supplies the finished plates
GOV.UK says you can only get a number plate made up from a registered number plate supplier. DVLA describes its registration scheme as applying to suppliers in the UK. Chinese manufacturing capability alone does not establish a suitable supply route for your replacement road plates.
Ask who will invoice you, supply the finished plates and check your documents. If a Chinese factory works through a UK supplier, get that supplier’s business name and supplying address before paying. For changes beyond replacement plates, use our vehicle modification guide.
Verify the claimed DVLA registration
Use GOV.UK’s number plate supplier finder to check the claimed supplying outlet. Match its details against the quotation and proposed plate markings. Do not accept a marketplace badge, company registration certificate or factory audit as your registration check.
If the outlet cannot be found or the seller claims an unusual overseas arrangement, ask DVLA’s Registration Plate Register helpline to clarify it before proceeding. Separately, request supporting evidence for the exact finished plate: supplier registration and product conformity are different checks.
Agree the original-document checks
The supplier needs to see original documents proving your name and address and your entitlement to use the registration number. A driving licence is listed for name and address; a passport confirms your name only. The vehicle registration certificate is an accepted entitlement document.
Before paying an online seller, ask how it will examine the required originals and which documents it accepts for your circumstances. Do not assume that uploading photographs completes the stated check. Verify the recipient before sharing documents, and avoid sending originals abroad without a clear return arrangement.
Check the plate markings and specification
DVLA’s leaflet requires permanent, legible markings identifying the manufacturer or supplier and the supplying outlet’s name and postcode. It specifies BS AU 145e for new or replacement plates fitted from 1 September 2021. Ask for close-up photographs of the actual markings and confirm that the supplying outlet matches your verified supplier.
For ordinary replacement car plates, check reflective material, black characters on white at the front and yellow at the rear, and no background pattern. Ask for artwork and evidence covering the exact finished construction, rather than a photograph of printed standard markings. Use our test-report verification guide to investigate supporting reports.

Make satisfactory evidence a payment condition
Put the registration number, approved artwork, materials, supplying outlet details and required evidence into the order. Agree what happens if the delivered plates differ, including replacement or refund arrangements and responsibility for return carriage. Follow our pre-payment guide for the wider supplier and shipment checks.
For your own vehicle, compare this arrangement with buying directly from a verified UK plate supplier. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China to check a factory and goods against an agreed brief. Keep the document-checking route and finished-plate acceptance conditions explicit before committing.
