Getting started

Can I use a China model radio controller in the UK?

Yes, if the exact transmitting configuration meets the applicable Ofcom licence or exemption conditions. Check frequencies, power and regional settings, then confirm receiver compatibility and acceptance at your intended club. Factory configuration evidence can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the controller and intended model

Ask for the exact transmitter model, hardware version, firmware, antenna and any removable radio module. Specify whether you will control aircraft, cars or boats. Request the manual and photographs of the supplied unit rather than relying on a listing that combines different regional versions.

Keep spectrum permission separate from product conformity. An importer placing radio equipment on the Great Britain market must ensure conformity with the essential requirements and that the manufacturer has carried out the relevant conformity assessment. Our radio equipment guide covers those wider product checks.

Compare actual transmissions with Ofcom conditions

Licence exemption depends on meeting specified technical parameters. Ask the supplier for the actual transmit frequencies, occupied bandwidth, channel access method and power in every intended mode. Obtain antenna details and clarify whether power is measured at the transmitter output or as radiated power.

Have a competent radio specialist compare that configuration with Ofcom's current conditions for the intended model-control or short-range-device use. Ask them to record the applicable conditions, any restrictions on airborne use and the supporting measurements. If the route remains unclear, send Ofcom the specification and intended use before transmitting.

Check what the regional menu actually changes

Ask the factory to explain each selectable region: frequencies, maximum power, channel access behaviour and any automatic power adjustment. Request evidence for the setting intended for UK use. A region label alone does not show what the radio transmits; compare the manual, configuration records and test results.

Check which setting arrives enabled and what happens after a reset, firmware update or module replacement. Specify the approved firmware and configuration in the order, and require approval before changes. Our test report verification guide explains how to check whether the evidence matches the supplied equipment.

Prove receiver compatibility and failsafe behaviour

Matching frequency bands alone does not prove compatibility. Ask for the exact receiver models, radio protocol, supported firmware and regional setting, together with binding instructions. If the receiver sends telemetry back, request its transmitting specifications too and include that return link in the spectrum check.

After resolving spectrum use, test the intended transmitter and receiver together. Check channel mapping, control direction, range-check operation, reconnection and the response to signal loss. Follow the equipment instructions and disable propulsion during bench checks. Agree suitable failsafe behaviour for the particular aircraft, car or boat rather than accepting factory defaults.

Get club acceptance before approving the purchase

Send your flying, racing or boating club the exact transmitter, receiver, firmware, frequency and power details before ordering. Ask what evidence, frequency coordination, range checks and failsafe demonstrations it expects. Keep its response with the purchase specification; club acceptance does not replace the spectrum check.

For aircraft, use our hobby aircraft guide for the separate aircraft and flying-site assessment. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can collect supplier records and compare the sample and shipment with your agreed configuration. Approve the order only when the technical questions and intended club's conditions are resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CE mark make my controller licence-free?

A CE mark alone does not establish licence exemption. Check the exact frequencies, power, antenna and operating modes against the applicable Ofcom conditions.

Can I just select the UK region?

Check what that setting changes and whether the evidence covers it. Confirm the shipped setting and what happens after resets or updates before relying on the menu label.

Will my existing receiver work with a China-market controller?

Ask for confirmation covering the exact receiver, protocol, firmware and regional setting. Test binding, channel mapping, telemetry and failsafe behaviour together.

Will my model club accept an imported controller?

Ask the intended club before ordering. Send the exact equipment and configuration details, then confirm its evidence, frequency coordination and practical check expectations.
