Getting started

How to check a China-bought pressure cooker

Before heating it, match the cooker to its manual and test evidence, inspect the cold lid lock and release parts, and confirm the correct seal. Never test safety devices by forcing a pressurised lid or blocking a vent. Hold use if anything is damaged or unclear. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to resolve factory questions.

Match the cooker to its documents

Photograph the model label, batch identification, lid, valves and supplied accessories. Ask the supplier for the English manual and test reports covering that exact configuration. Compare report photographs and model references with the delivered cooker, including its lid and seal. Use our test-report verification guide to check the evidence.

Keep this assessment separate from the wider import checks in our homeware and kitchenware guide. For an electric model, also follow our electrical imports guide. An official UK safety report identified a pressure cooker with a mains-plug fuse fault posing a serious fire risk.

Inspect the lid interlock while cold

With the cooker cold, empty and disconnected from power or heat, follow the manual to fit and remove the lid. Check locking tabs, handles and the sealing rim for damage or distortion. Confirm that the closed position is clear and the lid engages without improvised force. Identify the pressure indicator and ask how the interlock prevents opening while pressure remains.

A lid that closes neatly does not prove that its pressure interlock works. Ask for laboratory evidence covering unsafe opening and incorrect closure on the supplied design. Never test this by trying to open a pressurised cooker, pushing down its indicator or defeating its lock. Leave those tests to a suitably equipped laboratory.

Identify each pressure-release arrangement

Use the manual’s diagram to identify the normal pressure regulator, user-operated release where fitted, pressure indicator and backup overpressure protection. Ask the manufacturer to explain the backup arrangement if it uses a seal or another feature rather than a separate valve. Confirm where steam exits and how to operate the release without reaching across the outlet.

Inspect and clean removable parts only as the manual directs, with the cooker cold and depressurised. Check for packing material, food residue, missing components or incorrect assembly. Never plug an outlet or add weights. Follow the model’s filling limits, food restrictions and release method; do not borrow these from a similar cooker.

Confirm replacement seals and usable instructions

Ask for the manufacturer’s replacement-seal part reference and written compatibility with your exact model and lid revision. Match its profile, dimensions and specified material, not just its colour or apparent fit. Confirm the fitting method, replacement criteria and source of future spares. Do not use a generic ring merely because it fits the groove.

The English manual should explain assembly, filling, heat control, pressure indication, permitted release methods, safe opening, cleaning and fault handling. Match diagrams and control labels to the cooker. Use our assembly and use instructions guide to review clarity. Begin any manufacturer-prescribed commissioning run only after document and cold checks are resolved; a successful run does not certify safety.

Know when to stop using it

Do not start or continue use with damaged locking parts, a distorted lid or rim, loose handles, a split or displaced seal, obstructed release passages, a sticking indicator or missing safety components. Stop if steam escapes unexpectedly around the lid, pressure behaviour differs from the manual, backup protection operates, or an electric model smells burnt, sparks or overheats.

If a fault occurs during cooking, stop the heat or disconnect power only if safe. Keep clear of steam, leave the cooker undisturbed and follow its fault instructions. Never force it open or assume silence means pressure has gone. Check official UK safety notices against the model and batch, keep photographs and contact the seller. Do not resume use until the fault and any applicable safety notice are resolved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check a pressure-cooker lid lock at home?

Inspect cold assembly and visible damage following the manual. That cannot prove safe locking under pressure. Ask for matching laboratory evidence and never try to force a pressurised lid open.

Can I use a universal pressure-cooker seal?

Use a replacement confirmed by the manufacturer for your exact model and lid. Similar diameter or colour does not establish compatibility; profile and material matter too.

What if my pressure cooker has no English manual?

Keep it unused and ask the seller for the manufacturer’s English instructions for the exact model. Do not substitute a similar cooker’s manual or rely on an unverified translation.

Should I keep using a pressure cooker that leaks?

Stop if leakage is unexpected or differs from the manual. Turn off heat or power if safe, keep clear and let it depressurise as instructed. Do not tighten, dismantle or force the lid while pressure may remain.
